🥊 THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB

This week we’re continuing to work on range—and choosing the right punches for that range.

A good technician doesn’t just have skill. They know which tool to use and when to use it.

🥊 Long Range: 1–1–2
🥊 Long → Mid: 1–2–3
🥊 Mid Range: 2–3–2
🥊 Close Range: 4–3–6

Each combination has a purpose. Each works best at a certain distance.

The goal isn’t just to memorize combinations—it’s to understand why you’re throwing them and when to use them.

Having the right tool for the right job is everything.

This week, we’re all technicians.

This week we're working on one of my favorite concepts in boxing: The Back Step Counter
Instead of always meeting force with force, sometimes the smartest move is to create just enough space to make your opponent miss... then make them pay.

We'll be focusing on two key techniques:

👊 Back Step Check Hook
👊 Back Step Counter Cross

These aren't just flashy punches—they teach timing, distance, and patience. Rather than rushing in, you'll learn to stay composed, let the opportunity come to you, and capitalize when the moment is right.

That's a lesson that extends beyond the gym.

Sometimes the best move isn't to push harder. It's to create a little space, stay calm under pressure, and respond with purpose.

We'll see you in class!

This week is all about parrying.
Parrying is one of my favorite tactics in boxing.

Sometimes I'll block a few punches, parry or catch a few more, and let my opponent get comfortable.

Then, when they least expect it... I counter.

Good boxing isn't always about being faster or stronger. It's about strategy, patience, and creating the right opportunity.

This week we're going to work on some higher-level technique and strategy—and how to turn defense into offense.

Get ready. This is going to be a fun week.

See you at the gym. 🥊

Power isn't about muscles.

This week's theme at Santa Cruz Boxing is power... or, more accurately, force.

Yep, we're talking physics again.

You've probably heard me mention before that force equals mass × acceleration.

Last week we worked on the acceleration part—speed.

This week, we're adding the mass.

That's why I'm always reminding everyone to pivot.

A good pivot isn't just turning your foot. It's transferring your body weight into the punch. That's where real power comes from. It's one of the reasons a smaller, technically sound boxer can hit much harder than someone who simply muscles every punch.

But, like most things we teach, the lesson goes beyond boxing.

Real power in life doesn't usually come from trying harder. It comes from putting your whole self behind what you're doing. Your time. Your focus. Your commitment.

Whether you're learning a new skill, building your health, raising a family, or chasing a goal, there's a difference between going through the motions and truly committing.

That's where the real force comes from.

We'll be working on putting some weight behind our punches all week. I hope you'll come experience it with us.

We are in your corner.🥊
