Although it has naturalized (can live in the wild without human intervention) to North America and northern Asia the rusty tussock moth is native to Europe.

The four unusual looking humps along its back are made of hair. The two horn-like appendages and tail-like appendage on the opposite end are also made of hair.

When this strange looking caterpillar becomes an adult it will be clear whether it is male or female. The male will be a rusty orange colored moth with comma-like white markings on the lower part of the upper wing sections. The female cannot fly even though she has wings; they just don’t work. She looks a lot like a fat short grey and fawn colored caterpillar. She never leaves her cocoon but rather, once mated, lays her eggs on the outside of her cocoon. Neither adult ever eats which means they have very short life spans once they reach adulthood.

The cross orb weaver is an introduced species from Europe. They get their common name from the white cross that most bear on their backs. The white cross is evidence of guanine that has collected below the spider’s cuticle.

Each morning large females (only) build spiral shaped webs. Each night they consume their own web along with the smaller insects that were ensnared by the web. It feeds on flying insects: flies, mosquitoes, etc.

The spotted tussock moth is native to North America living mostly in the western half of the lower 48 and along the Canadian-American border. These caterpillars are generalists; they feed on many different species of hardwood trees and shrubs such as willows, poplars, birches, oaks, and maples.

Pictured is a mature larva; younger larvae do not have the black at either end.

Fern-Leaf yarrow is part of the same family as sunflowers, Asteraceae. Like sunflowers the “flower” that most people see isn’t actually a flower but rather many flowers clustered together in a way that makes them look like a flower. Sometimes there are different types of flowers like those seen in the Achillea genus. Achillea have 4-5 ray flowers on the outer edge of the “flower” and several (10-12) tube flowers at the center.

It is native to Europe and Asia though some believe it may have originated in Iran. It has naturalized to North America which means that with the correct conditions (amount of light, soil type, etc) it can grow on its own without human intervention.

The leaves grow along the base of the plant and look like thick fern leaves. The flower grows on a shoot that grows from the center to 3-4 ft (1.2m).

The western calligrapher is a flower fly; adults feed on the nectar of flowers. While they benefit from the nectar they are pollinating the flowers helping the plant reproduce. Western calligraphers are part of the Syphridae family. Syphridae are the second most important pollinator after bees.

As the name indicates these flies populate the western part of North America, specifically British Columbia south to California as well as Colorado and Texas.
