I am sad to hear that one of my former music professors, Don Wilcox, passed away this morning.

If you have ever seen "The Pride of West Virginia" a.k.a. the WVU Marching Band, you have seen his work. Under his direction, the band quadrupled in size, in part because it was Mr. Wilcox who allowed women into the group, beginning in 1972. You can read more about him in the link below.

Mr. Wilcox was very caring and supportive. He was all about his students. He saw something in me and heard things in my playing that others did not. He once wrote in a letter of recommendation for me, "Emily is the best piccolo player I have ever heard." He was too classy to say that my flute playing was far from the best he had ever heard. He encouraged me to continue with my music studies at the doctoral level, which at the time, I did not think I was good enough to pursue.

Godspeed, Mr. Wilcox. You are the real Pride of West Virginia and always will be.

As the Director of Bands for 34 years before his retirement in 2005, Wilcox is perhaps the most transformational band director in Pride history.

Wow! Two years in a row that the school I founded, Longleaf School of the Arts was voted Best High School in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill.) I am so grateful for this honor.

It is hard to believe that it has been more than 12 years since I submitted the application for the school, plus the many years before that that I spent developing the mission and vision, not to mention the year that it took to write the application. Sometimes hard work does pay off.
