The EMCC Development Foundation hosted Legacy Classic, EMCC's first golf tournament at Briarwood Golf Club in Meridian last Friday to benefit students’ academic and athletic programs This event was a success thanks to participating teams, the events presenting sponsor, Ochsner Rush Health, and other sponsors including Meridian Coca-Cola Bottling Company and Mitchell Distributing. On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, the Rotary Club of Oxford, MS enjoyed an inspiring presentation from Larry Anderson, a Mississippi native, respected higher education leader, and retired head men’s basketball coach at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Larry shared the remarkable journey that took him from rural Mississippi to MIT and reflected on the lessons in leadership, perseverance, culture, and service that shaped his career.
Larry’s journey began in Macon in Noxubee County and continued through East Mississippi Community College and Rust College, where he completed his playing career and graduated in 1987. He remained at Rust College Athletics as an assistant basketball coach and Director of Student Activities before also becoming Associate Director of Athletics. At age 25, Larry was elected to the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen, serving two four-year terms. In 1995, after learning of an opening for MIT’s head coaching position, he made the 24-hour drive from Holly Springs to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for an interview and earned the opportunity that would change the course of his life.
During 30 seasons at MIT Engineers Athletics, Larry transformed the men’s basketball program into a nationally recognized NCAA Division III contender and became the winningest coach in program history. He retired in 2025 with 441 victories, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 NCAA Tournament wins, six conference tournament championships, and four regular-season conference championships. His teams reached the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2012, advanced to the Elite Eight in 2018, and achieved the program’s first No. 1 national ranking. Larry was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
Larry’s influence at MIT extended well beyond the basketball court through teaching, mentoring, student development, and Institute-wide planning. He served on MIT’s Task Force 2021 and Beyond, working alongside faculty members, administrators, and students to help consider the institution’s future.
Today, Larry advises colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, governing boards, and executive leadership teams on leadership, governance, organizational culture, and institutional transformation. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Rust College Board of Trustees and remains involved with the East Mississippi Community College Foundation Board and Hall of Fame Committee.
The Rotary Club of Oxford thanks Larry for joining us and for sharing his remarkable journey and valuable insights on leadership, organizational culture, and service.
