When I was a teacher, I kept a joy jar in my classroom. Throughout the year, we added slips of paper with things that made us happy, laugh, or feel proud. “Put it in the joy jar!” became a common phrase, and the kids loved being the reason a slip was added. They loved celebrating each other.

One Christmas, my students gave me the most meaningful gift I’ve ever received. Three of them got together outside of school and filled a Christmas-themed tin with handwritten slips describing moments that made them happy in my classroom. Every year, I take it out and read those slips in their handwriting, and I’m instantly brought back to the joy they gave me.

I’ve seen a lot of posts recently from parents worried about affording teacher gifts. Please know that no teacher expects gifts from their students. And if you want to give something, share how your child comes home happy and proud each day, or tell them what they’ve done to help your child feel confident or love learning. Those are the gifts we never forget 💗

Hi everyone!
This semester, I’m teaching a course called Disability and Advocacy for first-year students at Bridgewater State University. Next week, we’re focusing on family engagement in the special education process.

Progress isn’t linear, especially in special education.

Some days, the growth is obvious: your child masters a skill, participates confidently, or meets a big goal.

Other days feel messier. It might seem like two steps back. But even then, there are small victories worth noticing.

Maybe your child asks for help. Maybe they recover from a hard moment more quickly than last time. Maybe they try again after struggling.

All of that is progress too. It matters, and it’s worth celebrating.

When a Team understands the whole child, not just their diagnosis or test scores, it changes everything.

We start to see what motivates them. What makes learning hard and what helps it click.

We write goals that enhance their strengths and build supports that reflect who they are, not just what they struggle with.

IEPs become more meaningful. Collaboration gets stronger. And kids feel seen, not just served.
