Joseph Center for Special Learning (SJC) is a special education school for students ages 5 through 21. Sponsored by the Office of Education, Diocese of Allentown (Pennsylvania, USA), St. Joseph Center offers academic, social, religious, and pre-vocational instruction to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Schuylkill County and beyond regardless of race, creed, and

ethnic origin. Joseph Center also offers a state licensed adult habilitation program for those over the age of 18 who, due to functional level, are unable to join the competitive or sheltered workforce. Our staff wrapped up two full days of in-service training yesterday, and weโ€™re feeling ready and excited for the school year ahead!

Our training included MANDT, a program that focuses on building positive relationships, preventing and de-escalating challenging situations, and creating a safe, supportive environment for everyone.

We also spent time learning, collaborating, sharing ideas, and strengthening the skills we use every day to support our students.

Now, weโ€™re ready for the best partโ€ฆ welcoming our students back on Monday! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ

As summer winds down, this week is about getting ready for whatโ€™s next while still enjoying time together. Take a little time to talk, create, and reflect on the new school year or upcoming routines.

Try ideas like: make a โ€œthings Iโ€™m excited aboutโ€ list or poster, draw your classroom, pack or organize school or program supplies together, set one small goal for the year ahead, talk about what youโ€™re looking forward to, share something that feels a little new or different and how you can prepare for it together

This can be a mix of excitement, questions, and reassurance. Take it at your loved oneโ€™s pace and focus on what feels positive and familiar.

Weโ€™re excited to share that Becky, our Adult Program Executive Director, has earned her ACRE Certificate!

This is an exciting step toward helping the adults in our program explore employment opportunities, find jobs in their communities, and receive the support they need to be successful.

We look forward to having more of our staff become ACRE certified as we continue expanding opportunities for the individuals we serve!

Principal Bob Giba recently joined local school and public officials to thank the Bridge Educational Foundation and its generous donors, M&T Bank, WM (Waste Management), and Raymond James, for their continued support through Pennsylvaniaโ€™s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.

Their generosity helps provide vital scholarships for our students and families, ensuring greater access to the specialized education, opportunities, and programs that make SJC so special.

We are incredibly grateful for the businesses and individuals who invest in our students and our mission through the EITC program. Both businesses and individuals can participate and make a meaningful impact!

Take on a simple Acts of Kindness Challenge together. The goal is to do a few small, thoughtful things during the week and notice how it feels to give kindness to others.

Try ideas like: hold the door open for someone, say something kind to a family member or friend, send a note/text/drawing to someone, help with a small chore at home without being asked, smile and greet someone you meet, share a compliment with a teacher, staff member, or neighbor

As you go through the week, talk together:
How did that feel?
What was your favorite kind thing you did?
How did others respond?
