Happy Public Service Day! ๐๐ฉบ
Today, we're shining a spotlight on College Relations' Student Worker, James Leap! โญ
A health science student by day and firefighter by night, James recently reached a new milestone by receiving his National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification, making him a certified EMT! James has aspirations to become a nursing student and to work in the medical field. With each step he has taken thus far, James continues to serve our community. He is a reminder that public service leads to stronger communities.
To every firefighter, teacher, librarian, healthcare worker, and public servant in between, we thank you! ๐โค๏ธ

Today, we recognize Juneteenth and those who fought for recognition.
A key voice in this effort is Opal Lee, known as the โGrandmother of Juneteenth.โ Born in Marshall, Texas in 1926, she earned a bachelorโs degree in elementary education and a masterโs degree in counseling and guidance, building a career rooted in education and community.
In June 2016, at 89 years old, Lee began a campaign walking 2.5 miles to symbolize the two and a half years it took for enslaved people in Texas to learn they had been freed.
Her efforts helped bring over 1.5 million signatures to Congress, leading to Juneteenth being recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
Juneteenth has been privately observed in Black communities for decades.
We hope you continue to seek education as a path toward understanding and freedom. ๐๐๏ธ
