Teaching children how to engage in healthy relationships is a priceless gift when can give children. Accomplishments don’t equal a happy life, meaningful relationships do. Unfortunately we often prioritize accomplishments(and bragging rights) over healthy relationships for kids. It’s likely that our parents did the same thing so it can be difficult to figure out what to do instead. You can pre-order the online course linked in my bio 33% off until June 5th. It is designed to help you teach your child to navigate relationships in a healthy way. You can learn at your own pace but get the online course now before it becomes full price. Thanks MrChazz, I Had to Post This!

I had a gentleman say to me, "The problem with kids today is their parents are afraid to beat the crap out of them like my Mama and Grandmama did me!" It never occurred to him that the kids today are being raised by those same parents who were beat the crap out of!

We often use the excuse, that's right I said it, EXCUSE, that if I'm financially, socially, or educationally successful, that I turned out okay!

You know that saying, My mom beat me and I turned out okay.... "I never went to jail", "I graduated from high school", "I have a decent job"....

But let me ask you this. How are you emotionally? How are you physically? How are you relationally? How are you mentally? How is your relationship with your child?

You may be okay but God intended for us to live abundantly, not just okay.

We had parents (and I'll say this a thousand times, they did what they knew) who whipped, yelled, and punished us to get us to follow directions, and that was not okay. For some of us they over powered us with their words. For others of us they shamed us into silent obedience. This was and is not the formula for creating the abundance, resilience, and creativity that we aspire to bring out in our children. It is a form of fear and control!

Punishment is so different from discipline.

Discipline says I love my child enough to
* collaborate with them
*to set boundaries with expectations and understanding
*to allow for feelings and voices to be shared and heard
* to choose consequences over force and fear.

Our children don't need to be fixed, saved, or put in their place. They need to be shown how to communicate. They need to be shown how to build relationships. They need to be given as much time to play as they do to work. They need to have the freedom to share their biggest victories as well as their greatest feelings, fears, and/or defeats.

They need to be loved not just okay!

A Prayer for Our Children

Children are a gift from the Lord. God show us how to guide the gifts you have given us in stewarding our children. Let us not bring them to raft but always consider their feelings valid and see them for who you uniquely created them to be.

Help us to invest time in our children, loving them through being present and sharing laughter and joy with them. They are one of our best investments, so let's honor them as such because what we pour into them lasts for generations.

Father help us to feel our children. When we feel what they feel, we are sensitive to their needs and not just our own. Feeling them let's them know they are seen and heard.

Your word says to train up a child in the way they should go. We want to teach them your ways God for you are loving, kind, patient, fearless, trustworthy, joyful, gracious and so much more. Let us be that to our children.

Help us be examples of the fruits of the spirit so that our children grow up exhibiting these traits in their lives. Even if they stray, Your way will be so planted in them that they will always be courageous enough to come back home.

Are You Aware If Your Child Is Struggling?

Why do I say this??? Within the last 3 years, I have had two young ladies in my life contemplate su***de (called suicidal ideation), 1 young man turn to frequent substance abuse, and 1 young lady starting fires and threatening to leave home. All of these youths are in my family or someone I see on a regular basis.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. Although people are often made more aware of mental health and wellness during this time of the year, waiting until the month of May CAN BE TOO LATE!

According to America’s Health Rankings: United Health Foundation in 2020, su***de was the second-leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24.
This is only second to accidents. In fact since 1999, the teen su***de rate has increased 35%.

There are many risk factors that lead to su***de. Some of the risk factors for su***de according to the CDC are depression, loss of a relationship or loss of a loved one, discrimination, bullying, and physical or sexual abuse.

Because youth process things much differently than adults we may not see, feel, or respond to struggles with the same impulsiveness that they do! Youth under the age of 25 do not think rationally, or function with higher order thinking skills and sound judgment because their brains are not fully developed.
They begin to participate in risky behaviors when they are struggling, to numb the pain and as a cry for help.

So what can we do to notice and become more aware of our children’s struggles?

Notice a change in attitude, mood, or behavior. (don’t just chalk it up to hormones)
Notice a loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy.
Pay attention to a slip in grades or behavior struggles in school.
Watch for sudden changes in appetite. (they eat all the time or never want to eat)
Are they sleeping all the time or disengaged and withdrawn?
Are there increased and unexplained ailments? (headaches, stomach aches, etc)
Talking about death and su***de.

These are just a few examples of what may signal that your child may be suffering from a struggle, a short term, or long term mental health crisis. DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE SIGNS. PLEASE BE AWARE! AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Let's keep it real! It's hard to step back and discover our children and who they really are without putting our own expectations of who we want them to be in the mix of raising them. Don't you agree? The struggle is real. It doesn't have to be....
