♟️ Grant Showcase: Students Leading Students at BPL @ WIEC! ♟️

What happens when you hand students the chance to lead? Magic. ✨

Thanks to an SCSDEF grant, Julie Neugebauer helped launch 12 student-run clubs—all proposed, planned, and facilitated by students themselves. 🎨

The grant stocked every club with the essentials: chess boards and timers, paints, canvases, easels, snacks, prizes, and even student-designed sweatshirts. 💛

Every Friday afternoon, the room came alive. Chess club and art club filled to capacity, students taught each other new skills, and matching sweatshirts became a proud weekly tradition. Best of all? They won and lost with kindness, building real community along the way. 🏆

🌟 Grant Showcase: Every Student Shines at William C. Keane Elementary! 🌟

Some moments give you goosebumps. This showcase was full of them. ✨

Thanks to an SCSDEF grant, Latia George created the Shining Stars Talent Enrichment Showcase—a stage where every single student had a place to shine. 🎤

And shine they did. A student who'd been selectively mute since September found their voice in a puppet show. The shyest first-grader stepped into the spotlight and sang with pure grace. Non-verbal students joined right in, creating rhythmic beats to match the music—communicating, connecting, and beaming with pride. 💛

Songs and dances celebrated the cultures of our families. Parents filled the room. And students who often struggle to feel "successful" hit the highest note of their year. 🎶

This was more than a talent show. It was belonging, confidence, and community—all in one unforgettable night. 🙌

🤖 Grant Showcase: Schenectady Robots Take on the World's Toughest Arena! 🤖

"Saturday was a movie." 🎬

That's how one student described competing at the National Havoc Robot League in Norwalk, CT—the toughest combat robotics competition on the planet. 🔥

Thanks to an SCSDEF grant, Andrew Davis brought 8 Schenectady High School students and 2 teachers to build 3lb combat robots and go head-to-head with engineers holding degrees from MIT, RPI, Cornell, and more. ⚙️

The result? Two of our students smashed through to the final 16 out of 80 bots—making SCRC the best-performing high school team at the event. 🏆

Even better: these kids fell in love with STEM and engineering, and they're already dreaming up next year's builds. That's the real win. 💛

💼 Grant Showcase: Young Entrepreneurs Take the Lead at Schenectady High School! 💼

What happens when students get to build a real business from the ground up? Big ideas, hard work, and a whole lot of pride! ✨

Using a grant, Jac Cohn's Makerspace Enterprise turned students into founders. They designed and sold their own products to the SHS community—think custom t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, light-up keychains, and more. 👕🔑

The results speak for themselves: 13 student businesses launched, with 10 more in the works! Along the way, students gained real-world experience in creating, marketing, and running a business of their own. 💛

🎣 Grant Showcase: Reeling in the Fun at Central Park School! 🎣

There's nothing like the thrill of a first catch! 🐟
Thanks to an SCSDEF grant, Daniel Kennedy and the Central Park Fishing Club reeled in a fresh set of fishing poles—retiring the old, broken gear and getting students back out on the water. ✨

The result? A club that's growing more popular by the day, with students hooked on the fun and ready for their next big adventure. 💙

Sometimes the best way to connect isn't through words—it's through a song. 🎶

Kristina DeAngelo at Mont Pleasant Middle School brought new instruments and activities into her intensive skills social-communication classroom, supporting students with autism in grades 6–8. 🥁✨

With drums, scarves, ribbons, and rhythm sticks, students explored music and movement together—building vocabulary, practicing turn-taking, and finding new ways to communicate and connect. 💙

The results? Real, documented growth on student IEP goals, more engagement, and joyful moments of shared learning. And the best part: nonverbal students shined right alongside their peers, included and celebrated every step of the way. 🌟

💛 Honoring a Legacy, Celebrating a Future 💛

Some students leave a mark that lasts far beyond their time with us. Aaliyah Torain was one of them. A passionate member of the SCLA Culinary program, Aaliyah brought heart, talent, and joy to everything she created. Though we lost her last year, her spirit continues to inspire everyone who knew her.

This year, we're proud to introduce a scholarship created in her memory; a way to carry her love of the culinary craft forward. And we're honored to award the very first Aaliyah Torain Memorial Scholarship to Zaniah Gholson-Mosher! 🔪✨

Zaniah will receive the knife set that the SUNY Schenectady culinary program will use this year. A meaningful, hands-on tribute to the art Aaliyah cherished so deeply. Every dish prepared with it will carry a piece of her story.

Congratulations, Zaniah. We can't wait to see all that you'll create.

What happens when 6th graders get to build instead of just draw? Pure creativity! ✨ Swipe to see the beautiful results!

Mandi Manning's students at Oneida Middle School created their very own "wind sculptures," inspired by contemporary artist Yinka Shonibare. 🌬️

Using foam, wire, and nylon stockings shaped with a glue-and-gesso mixture, each student crafted a one-of-a-kind 3D sculpture—then brought it to life with acrylic paint and detailed paint markers. 🖌️

Some chose bold colors just for fun, while others added meaningful symbols and designs all their own. The result? A room full of proud young artists who can't wait to bring their creations home to share with family!
