A dyslexic mind rarely moves in a neat A ➔ B ➔ C line. Instead, it fires off in multiple directions simultaneously, weaving together ideas that seem totally unrelated until the whole picture clicks.

It might take a dynamic path to get there, but the connections made along the way are where true creativity happens. ✨

While school and traditional work environments are often structured for linear, step-by-step processing (read left-to-right, follow 1-2-3), the dyslexic brain excels at spatial reasoning, holistic pattern recognition, and lateral thinking. It processes the whole system simultaneously rather than one piece at a time.

Having dyslexia can be exhausting!
So much of our day-to-day lives relies on our ability to read.
Being a dyslexic student is all-consuming.
The fatigue caused by reading, writing, spelling and studying is such a mammoth effort for us that we often feel tired.
Trying to keep up with our peers in class, keeping on top of our studies and constantly feeling like we’re falling short, means we are often burnt-out and stressed by the end of the day.
We constantly feel swamped.
So please don’t ever mistake our fatigue and tiredness for being bored, lazy or defiant, in fact the opposite is usually true, we are working harder, longer and exerting more focus and energy than you can possibly imagine!

Dyslexia doesn’t disappear when a student graduates, but IEPs don’t transfer to higher ed. The good news is that the university’s Disabilities Services Office can look at past documentation (like IEPs) and provide accommodations. The caveat is that students must be the ones to advocate for themselves. That’s why it’s so important to teach your child/student about their learning differences and walk them through how to request the things that will help them succeed.

Many students leave school every day defeated and deflated because we make the mistake of focusing too much on weaknesses.
We find what students struggle with and spend most of our time trying to fix it.
But great teachers learn something pretty quickly.
If you want students to grow, you start by helping them experience success.
And the only way you find that doorway is through relationships.

When you really know your students, you begin to notice things others miss.
You see what they’re good at.
What interests them.
Where they light up.

Then you find ways to bring those strengths into the classroom so they can experience success. Especially the students who rarely do.
Because something powerful happens when a student succeeds.

Success builds confidence.
Confidence builds resilience.
Resilience leads to more success.

I call it The Success Cycle:

Strengths → Success → Confidence → Resilience → More Success

But unfortunately many students experience the opposite cycle:

Weaknesses → Struggle → Self-Doubt → Avoidance → Disengagement → Hating School

And sometimes we make it even worse.
Students who are already struggling spend most of the day hearing about what they can’t do.
Then we start pulling them out of the classes where they actually feel successful. Art, music, PE, and other classes they enjoy. So they can spend even more time working on their weaknesses.

And then we act surprised when those students begin to hate school.
Yes… hate school.

Great teachers break that cycle.
They know students are more than test scores and deficits.
They build relationships.
They look for strengths others overlook.
They create opportunities for students to experience success.

That’s why teachers are the most important part of the entire process.
Because when a teacher helps a student experience success sometimes for the first time, it can change the way that child sees school… and themselves.

Drs. Bennett and Sally Shaywitz originated and championed the “Sea of Strengths” model of dyslexia which emphasizes a sea of strengths of higher critical thinking and creativity surrounding the encapsulated reading weakness found in children and adults who are dyslexic.
