Toa Tumaini Foundation

Toa Tumaini Foundation (meaning "To Give Hope") was created to support local Tanzanian efforts to bet Toa Tumaini Foundation, Inc.

Toa Tumaini Foundation was created in partnership with a local organization, Project Hope School. Together we strive to better the lives of street children and orphans, and those at risk of becoming street children and orphans in the village of Kariwa, Tanzania and nearby villages. We provide funding, resources, advocacy, and support to local community members in order to assist in the development

Operating as usual

Back in September, we learned that the landlord of our current school space will be repurposing the location in the near future.

This means that we will soon be without a school home. But since receiving this news, we’ve been working hard to fundraise for our Planting Roots Campaign so that we can build our own school building and continue providing education to children in Tanzania.

With the help of generous donors like you, we’ve already raised $7,365 to help fund a permanent school home. But we still have money to raise.

Visit our website to donate today!

Not sure what to get that loved one as a gift this year? We have the perfect idea for you! Give the gift of education this Christmas with a donation to Toa Tumaini students in your loved one’s name 💙. Help empower and create a brighter future for children in need in Tanzania.

Meet our lead teacher, Happyness.

Teacher and mother, Happyness, goes beyond ensuring our school runs smoothly day-to-day and educating students on math and reading. She represents a safe and caring adult, she pays attention to their well-being, and she teaches them about real-world problems and solutions (like littering and reusing).

We’ve shared some stories about our students in the past couple of weeks, but your donations also help fund the salary for school staff like our lead teacher, Happyness, which makes a huge impact on families and the community as a whole.

Together we've raised $7,335 to provide students with education and teachers with employment. We're not there yet but we're on our way!

Donate to our Planting Roots Campaign today.

We missed Small Business Saturday so we are celebrating today instead! 💼 💞

We want to highlight the small businesses in our communities and show them appreciation for all they do. These businesses donate a percentage to TTF, and we are so grateful to them investing in the education of students in Tanzania.

Take time today to visit a small business in your area and show them you care—trust us, it'll mean the world to them. Tag your favorite small businesses in the comments so everyone else can get to know them too! Our faves are listed as well 👇🤗

It's and we wanted to take some time to explain just how far your dollars go when you donate to TTF's programs.

Did you know that your donations provide more than education for children? They support entire families in our community.

Many caregivers have an extremely limited income. This means they're faced with the difficult decision of sending their children to school or feeding and clothing them. Sometimes, they need to decide which child to send to school because they can't afford to send all of them. On top of that, the lack of access to quality nursery schools and Pre-K programs makes it difficult for parents to leave their homes in order to find work to support their families, making this a vicious cycle.

We know you have plenty of worthy causes to choose from on Giving Tuesday and picking the right one can be overwhelming. Choosing to donate to our Planting Roots Campaign right now means you are choosing to provide quality education to children in Tanzania, and it also means removing the stress from already overburdened guardians. Your generosity has far-reaching impacts.

Donate to the Planting Roots campaign for today!

Meet S. This young man has been part of Toa Tumaini’s programs since we opened our doors in March of 2012. Back then, he was a sweet little 4-year-old with a knack for sports and a love of learning. However, his family struggled to afford school fees and other costs associated with his education (such as shoes, uniforms, and school supplies). His enrollment into our programs allowed them to breathe a sigh of relief.

Today, S attends secondary school and dreams of being the president of Tanzania.

When we build our own school space, we’ll have the honor of educating many more future presidents of Tanzania. And you’re a key piece of this equation. Help us build our new school by donating today.

Happy Thanksgiving!🦃 We are grateful to everyone who has supported our mission to provide quality education to our students in Tanzania. Thank you!

Have you ever asked your child what they want to be when they grow up? Though we know the importance of letting kids be kids, we believe it's equally important to teach them to dream of their future. But this all starts with hope because if a child doesn't think their goals are reachable, they are less likely to fight for them. Here at Toa Tumaini, we've made it our mission to empower kids in Tanzania to believe in and reach for their dreams.

Swipe to see some of the real dreams of our students.

is just ONE week away. This year, donate to the Planting Roots campaign and help students bring their dreams to life.

Did you know that Tanzania is home to one of the largest populations of Masai giraffes, or twigas, in the world? 🤩 They are listed as an endangered animal. These gentle giants can be found in their natural habitat in the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. 🦒

Meet V! She is one of the students who has been with Toa Tumaini’s programs since the very beginning. When we first met V, she was four years old, attending our nursery school. Now, twelve years later, she's a thriving 16-year-old in secondary school.

Twelve years ago, we couldn’t have dreamt of the impact your donations and Toa Tumaini’s programs would have on her life. But here we are.

As we continue to fundraise for our Planting Roots Campaign, please consider helping us continue our impact on the lives of kids just like V. Your donations will help us build a permanent school space to continue empowering Tanzania’s youth.

🧡 This time of year always leaves us feeling grateful. 🧡

We've been able to accomplish so much these last 12 years. When we first started Toa Tumaini, we never thought we'd be where we are today. But thanks to our community of donors and volunteers, we've come so far, and we are beyond humbled.

With your donations, we've been able to provide more than 7 jobs, educate more than 100 students, and provide access to healthcare to more than 30 students. THANK YOU!

Tell us, what accomplishments are you thankful for this year?

We recently learned that we will need to leave the school space we have been renting for the past several years, and on short notice. While we’ve had a great relationship with our landlord over the years, she is ready to repurpose the space. This was devastating news for us, as our team has really made the space something special, and the place our students call home. We were able to negotiate to stay until June of 2024, but that gives us less than a year to find a new location for our school.

We continue to run our daily programs and staff our school as we always have. But behind the scenes, we have been working diligently to figure out how to make faster progress towards the Planting Roots Campaign.

With the new looming deadline of June 2024 ahead, we've set a goal to purchase land and build the nursery school phase of our school by June as well.

The new plan will be completed in phases and will cost us $25,000. But in order to break ground, we need to purchase land and necessary supplies. The good news is that we have a couple of donors who are willing to match our first $9,000 raised!

Will you consider donating to the Planting Roots Campaign to help us raise money for our new school? Remember, your donation can make double its impact with the matching donors!

“A good education is a foundation for a better future.” —Elizabeth Warren

We couldn't agree more with this quote by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren .

One of the key reasons that TTF's programs are so important is that they lay the foundation for a better future for children in Tanzania. We believe that education is the starting point of the future children deserve.

Special thanks to everyone who participated in our squares fundraiser! This is one of our favorite fundraisers to host and we know many of you love it too. Together we raised over $1,000 to help build the kids at TTF a new school.

While the school year is just starting here in America, our students in Tanzania are nine months into their academic year! (In TZ, the new school year begins in January of each year).

Here they are, hard at work 📚

Swahili word of the day: Coffee (kahawa)

Because who doesn't need a cup of coffee on a Monday morning!

Did you know Tanzania is famous for its coffee beans? It's true. The foothills of Kilimanjaro are a great place to grow coffee beans. We have friends in Tanzania who can take you on an AMAZING coffee and waterfall tour. You'll visit a real coffee farm and learn about their growing and harvesting, and get to take part in making your very own cup of joe. Afterwards, you can enjoy a scenic hike to the jaw-dropping Materuni Waterfalls

Chips Mayai is a popular Tanzanian dish that can easily be found in the streets of towns and cities across the country. It's a simple yet delicious dish made of potatoes, eggs, onions, tomatoes, and spices. 🥔🍳

It's a unique and scrumptious snack, often enjoyed with a cup of chai or as a light meal. 🍵 Do you love trying new dishes? Have you ever had Chips Mayai? 🤔

With a little help from our fav mini volunteers, our squares board is officially ready for Sunday’s big game.

As always, big thanks to our squares players for helping us raise money for education in Tanzania.

Good luck!!

One of our all time favorite fundraisers is only one week away! The Bears Vs. Packers football game is quickly approaching. But you're in luck... we still have a few squares left.

This fundraiser is a ton of fun because you can win money and it adds extra excitement to your Sunday game viewing. Plus, you can help us build a school. How much cooler can it get?

Ready to play? Remember, just follow these 3 steps:
1️⃣ Choose the number of squares you want (remember, each square gets you a chance to win) and leave a comment here letting us know how many we should reserve for you.
2️⃣ Pay us for your squares ($20/square). Payment options include paypal , venmo , or check made out to Toa Tumaini Foundation. Once all of the squares are purchased, we will randomly assign each person's space.
3️⃣ Tune in to the game on September 10 at 3:25 to see if you win!

But hurry because these squares won't last long!
