“Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” District 54 Special Olympics is an agency of Special Olympics Illinois and services athletes from age 3 to 8th grade in a variety of sports and activities.

This week's spotlight is Erin! Erin began competing in 1995! She competed in track & field and bowling and was in Partner's Club. She loved going downstate with her family, all the great coaches and stopping during her 100m walk event to wave at her fans! Erin is still involved in SO today and loves to look back at pictures of her time as an athlete in D54.

Our spotlight this week is Heather! She began competing with us in 2008 and continued for 7 years. She competed in basketball, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, bocce, track and field, golf, bowling, floor hockey, and unified soccer. She said that some of her favorite memories were from staying in the dorms during summer games. She met some of her best friends while involved in our program and she still stays in touch with them and they get together to play bocce. Heather is currently living in Iowa working in a retail store and training with 2 coaches.

This week's athlete spotlight is Sammi! Sammi began participating in Special Olympics in District 54 in 2013 and continued until she graduated in 2019. Sammi identifies as a runner and once set a goal for herself after surgery to be back on the track at Spring Games and she did it! She is currently on the D211 Special Olympics team and enjoys taking drum lessons and singing in the chorus.

This week's athlete spotlight is Michael! He began competing in Special Olympics around 2007 and kept going all the way through 8th grade with us. Michael competed in bocce, swimming and track and field among others. Competing gave him something to look forward to and he strived to always do well in his competitions. Michael continues to participate in Special Olympics doing swimming, bowling and Challengers baseball. #Grizzlies54 #30YearsIn54
Our first athlete spotlight is Vance! Vance began competing in Special Olympics in 1996 when he was in junior high. He did the 50m run and softball throw. He says his favorite memory is having fun with his friends and family at events and that Special Olympics made him feel good and like he was a part of a great team! Vance currently works part time at the District 54 Rafferty Administration Center. #Grizzlies54 #30YearsIn54
