Take Action: Tell Your Representative to Support Funding for Statewide Family Engagement Centers in FY22

Now, more than at any other time, families are critical and primary to the success of their children. Congress must continue to recognize the important role of parents and families in a child’s education and support the Statewide Family Engagement Centers program. The best way to make your voice heard is by contacting your Representative today. It takes just a minute and will make a big impact. The deadline for your Representative to sign onto the SFEC letter is April 22nd!

Please take 3-4 minutes to send a letter to your legislators to urge them to prioritize our children in the FY22 state budget. Click on the link below to go to a prepared letter that you can use as is or customize it to include your own reasons for supporting Evidence-Based Funding (EBF) Formula for education.

The Illinois General Assembly is debating next year’s state budget now through the end of May. When the EBF formula was passed in 2017, the legislature committed to providing an additional $350 million dollars to the formula annually for at least ten years.

That commitment was broken last year when no additional funding was added to the formula. This year the governor has again proposed no additional funds for EBF. This is not acceptable for our children, their futures, and the future of Illinois.

The EBF formula is working. But, by not providing the promised additional funding, Illinois schools will fall further behind and that's not fair to our children.

Our children need your voice, send your letters today!
Click below to make your voice heard.

School District 54

Today, the state released guidance for schools to return to in-person instruction in August 2020.

This 60-page document includes information on wearing masks, social distancing, and other requirements from the Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education intended to keep everyone safe and healthy, while also welcoming students and staff back to our schools.

District 54 is well aware of the need to communicate to families and staff about what to expect next school year and will be providing you more information on our district plan in the coming weeks.

Right now, we don’t have all the answers to the questions you may have as this document was released to school districts at the same time it was released to the public this afternoon. Therefore, we kindly ask for your patience as we thoroughly reviews this detailed guidance and implement the suggestions into our district’s own transition plan.

As you may know, our district has already been discussing various options. Now that this much-anticipated guidance has been released, we will be able to develop a plan that follows state regulations, prioritizes the health and safety of our students, and maintains a dynamic learning environment.

Thank you again for your patience, understanding and flexibility as our entire district navigated a situation together that none of us could have imagined. Together we can fulfill the District 54 mission of ensuring the academic success and well-being of our students.

We will be in touch soon. In the meantime, stay safe and enjoy your summer.

Elizabeth Blackwell Elementary School PTA

The 2020-2021 PTA Reflections Program theme has been announced and is: "I Matter Because....".

What a perfect theme for this challenging time. All students at Blackwell are encouraged to start thinking about their original works of art inspired by the theme. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts.

Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.

More details to be announced in the next few months. If you child wants to get a start on this over the summer, please email [email protected] for the category requirements.

Congratulations Pily Vences!!!

Illinois Chapter of the National School PR Assoc. (INSPRA) defines a Distinguished Service Award winner as someone who supports or improves understanding and communication in a school or district and fosters cooperative partnerships between school and community. We are pleased to share that Pilar Vences, a volunteer and parent from Hanover Highlands Elementary School and Robert Frost Junior High, received this honor in the parent category.

Pilar has served as the PTA president at Frost Junior High School and Hanover Highlands Elementary School, having a son at each of the schools. In these roles, she fosters cooperative partnerships, strengthens support for education, and improves communication to positively influence the staff, students, families and community at large.

Pilar gives her time and effort to support students through various PTA activities that promote high achievement and positive culture at Frost and Hanover Highlands. Aside from her PTA responsibilities, Pilar displays leadership in promoting additional parent involvement through various school and district events. She develops further connections by providing our Spanish-speaking community with opportunities to learn and grow around school resources.

However, Pilar’s influence extends beyond the PTA. This past year she worked with facilitators of District 54’s Schaumburg Parent University to ensure programs were accessible to Spanish-speaking families. Pilar took it upon herself to find thoughtful, Spanish-speaking presenters and even attended their presentations in advance to determine if they were worthwhile before recommending them for Parent University. Pilar said she became involved in District 54 to support the children, but also other families who need help navigating an education system different from the one where they grew up. #WeAre54 #54Pride
