Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated proudly supports President Joe Biden’s nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as the first Black woman Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court.

The extraordinary qualifications, character, experience, integrity and commitment to upholding the United States Constitution that Ketanji Brown Jackson will bring to the Supreme Court is needed now more than ever. As a two-time Harvard University graduate who currently serves on the D.C. Court of Appeals, widely known as the second most powerful court in the country, Judge Jackson is a seasoned and skilled jurist with a wide range of judicial experience: from working as an assistant federal public defender representing indigent defendants to serving as vice chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission for several years.

This nomination, while historic, is not symbolic. It represents the inclusion of not only a skilled jurist on the Court, but the opportunity to bring a diversity of thought, lived experiences and perspective that has never been represented on our nation’s highest court in the 233 years of its existence.

A strong democracy can only thrive when the people of the nation are reflected in the leadership of the nation. To this end, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated strongly urges the United States Senate to move with fairness and respect to expeditiously execute this nomination process and confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court. In doing so, we are confident that her confirmation will bring the country one step closer to achieving greater judicial diversity and a judicial system that better represents all Americans.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated joins the country in mourning the loss of member and trailblazing politician Carrie Meek who made her transition on November 28, 2021. Carrie Meek, daughter of a sharecropper and the granddaughter of a slave, was one of the first African-American lawmakers to represent Florida in Congress since the Reconstruction Era. As a devoted public servant, Soror Meek was committed to using her position to fight against injustices throughout the state of Florida. She championed causes including health care, education, jobs, and housing to create a more equitable quality of life for the communities where she lived, served, and represented. A proud alumnus of Florida A&M University, Soror Meek was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta at the Beta Alpha Chapter in 1946.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will remain committed to being a force for social action, using her legacy and words, "…Until we do all we can to improve the character of our communities, we'll never break the cycle of violence and indifference," as guidance.

The Omega Omega Service for Soror Meek is scheduled for Monday, December 6, at 4:30 pm at Miami Dade College - North Campus (William and Joan Lehman Theater | 11380 NW 27th Avenue | Miami, Florida 33167)

Delta Sigma Theta wishes our members, partners, and friends a blessed Thanksgiving holiday! Let us remember to give thanks in all things. #DSTGiveThanks #DST1913

Justice prevailed today with a guilty verdict in Ahmaud Arbery’s murder trial, all three men found guilty. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. recognize that there is much to be done in this country, where the lives of Black Americans are consistently devalued. However, this verdict sends a message that Black Lives Matter and justice will triumph against racism and hate crimes. We can now go into the Thanksgiving holiday giving thanks that Ahmaud’s life mattered.

Let’s keep the Arbery family lifted in prayer and let’s continue to fight for justice in this country.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month.

Diabetes is an important issue in the African American community. We are twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and to suffer devastating complications including death; blindness; kidney disease; and amputation.

1 in 3 people have prediabetes, and it is estimated that 20% of African Americans suffer from diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. To find out your Type 2 diabetes risk, we urge you to take this 60-second test ( offered by the American Diabetes Association. We also urge you to know your A1C and make healthy lifestyle changes.
