Winston Churchill PTA

Hi Everyone! Each year our PTA collects donations to put together raffle baskets and contribute to auction activities to raise money for the Schaumburg Town Council of PTAs annual auction. The proceeds from this auction go towards providing scholarships to current and former District 54 students. We have already collected many items and have received donations to cover our baskets and wine bottles we are supposed to bring. Where we need some help is in collecting five $25 Gift Cards for one of the games at the auction. If you own or have a connection to a business, we would be so grateful if you are able to donate a gift card to the cause. Please reach out to me via Facebook or email me at [email protected] if you would be interested in helping out. Thank you so much!
Churchill D54 Auction As many of you know, District 54 PTA does an auction to raise money for scholarships for current and previous District 54 students. Each school PTA is responsible for contributing 5 large baskets for auction, 3 bottles of wine, and 5 $25 gift certificates. We have already had a lot of really great and generous donations to help build our donation baskets. We are still in need of a few items to help compliment our main items or complete our required donation list! Please sign up by February 1st (or earlier for my sanity) and would really appreciate if you could get the items to me by February 14th. We can coordinate as it gets closer to meet to get the items! Thanks so much!!
Hello! Can you post yearbook info one more time? Thank you!
Calling all artists to join us in this years PTA art competition! Your child can submit a project using this years guidelines in visual art, literature, music, film, dance or photography and develop a project for this years theme Hero's Around Me. Their projects along with application form and artist statement are due to your child's teacher by October 31. Top projects can advance to district, state and national levels for a chance to win prizes and scholarships. All students K-6 are eligible and there is also a category for special artists. Entry forms and guidelines in the comments and copies will also be available in the office. Check out the link above to see all the ways Moretti's can help you raise money for your school
This Year's reflection topic is the Heroes Around me. If your child is looking for something to keep them busy this summer or they find something that inspires them, please encourage them to work on an art project for this years reflections program. Guidelines will be posted when available. Did you know your child can opt out of the PARCC test? They just need to say no they are opting out. While I do see it necessary to take tests. No one can answer why this test consumes our school for 2 to weeks or what's its purpose. As a PTA we are to bring the fun factor but our main job is to advocate for our students.

Please review Mr. Kernโ€™s email sent out today.

Steve Kern, Principal

Dear Churchill School Families,

Hopefully, you all had a chance to read the email sent by the district on Friday. The email includes a link to a detailed plan that we believe will allow us to safely bring students back to school using a hybrid model (2 days a week on campus and 3 days remote). Families can also choose to remain in full remote learning five days a week.

Please log into and select Hybrid On-Campus Model or Full Remote Learning by 6 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 6. If we do not hear from you by this time, we will assume you are choosing remote. If you cannot access your portal account, you may call the school or email me your choice.

All principals are sending a follow-up email today, so that you know you can reach out to us with any questions specific to our school or your child. We also want to make sure that you understand that the plan shared Friday is based on the public health information we have at this time. The plan may be adjusted as new guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Department of Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and other public health officials is received or as necessary to best support the health and safety of our students and employees. All updates will be posted online at and shared with our families and employees.

At this time, students would return on October 19. It is possible that date could be pushed back. It is also possible that at any time during the school year, we may have to move to all students attending school remotely. We want to make that clear to you up front and promise that we will keep you informed as soon as possible of any changes.

We also want you to know that we are still working out some specific details based on your responses. Once we know which students are choosing each option, we can assign your children to Group A or Group B, assign bus routes and assign where your child will enter the school.

We all share the same goal - the academic success and social-emotional well-being of the children in this community. Thank you for all of your support as we work together to achieve this goal.

Update from last nightโ€™s District 54 Board Meeting

The following email was sent to families and staff on Oct. 1:

As you know, the COVID-19 Global Pandemic is the most significant public health crisis our society has faced in recent times. Throughout the year, District 54 has navigated the changing circumstances, unprecedented challenges and evolving guidance and information. We thank our employees, our students and their families for their support and dedication to children.

Our commitment has always been to resume in-person learning when health and safety conditions enable us to do so. At this time, we are offering families the opportunity to send their children back to school under a modified hybrid model. At the same time, families will continue to have the option of full-remote learning throughout the pandemic. Every attempt will be made to keep students in both the remote and in-person models with their current teachers.

The hybrid model includes two full days of in-person instruction and three days of remote learning each week. This hybrid model will allow us to lower class sizes and adhere to social distancing guidance. In addition, various safety protocols have been developed to protect our students and staff, including a daily screener, the requirement of masks and temperature checks.

As required by Governor Pritzkerโ€™s Restore Illinois Plan, a 100% return to in-person learning will not occur until there is broad access to a safe and effective vaccine, a highly effective treatment and/or when there are no new cases over a sustained period of time.

Full details can be found in the Reopening D54 Plan on our website at We have also created a Reopening District 54 Video, in English and Spanish, which can be shared with your children to help them better visualize the school day. It is posted on the website.

Parents/guardians please log in to using your portal log-in information by Tuesday, Oct. 6, and select full remote or hybrid in-person for each child (see page 3 of the Reopening District 54 Plan for more information). If you have not created a portal account yet, please email [email protected] for assistance.

New Staff Shout Out
Meet Mrs. Moneghittie! This is her first year as a full time special education teacher! Sheโ€™s worked as a counselor for an overnight camp for a few years, as a resident assistant in a nursing home in the memory care unit, full time as a daycare teacher, tutored and worked at the front desk at Northeastern Illinois, and also babysits when she can! Fun fact: her husband is from Australia! And! She also illustrated a childrenโ€™s book that her uncle published over the summer! #weare54 #churchillpride #newstaffshoutout

Email from Mr. Kern regarding clubs!! Please see the actual email for the link to the club sign up sheet.

Steve Kern, Principal
(847) 357-6300

Dear Churchill community,

It is so great to see that our school year is underway with students and teachers firmly establishing routines! We are so excited to be able to now provide club offerings to our 1st through 6th grade students. Please click on the link at the bottom of the email to take you to our registration Google Form. Here you will see a description of each of the clubs that we are offering this year. Please complete the registration process if your child is interested in one of the clubs. The form can be completed multiple times, if you have multiple children in our school.

As we have done in the past, we have included registration for all of the clubs taking place this year. Please note that some clubs will not start until later this year. Our goal is to try and get all interested students into at least one of their club preferences, however unfortunately we cannot guarantee that every student will receive their first choice selection.

Club registration will remain open until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th.

Club assignments will then be made and an email confirmation will be sent to you on Friday, October 2nd.

Club sponsors will follow up with more specific information about club meetings.

We hope that you and your family are doing well!

[09/18/20]   Exert from The District 54 Visions Newsletter

Brief from the Board meeting on Sept. 17, 2020
Discussion - Update on Pandemic Advisory Committee Work
On June 23, 2020, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) working partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) released initial guidance for the reopening of schools this fall. This guidance placed a priority on providing in-person instruction with significant safety modifications including the wearing of masks, symptoms screening, social distancing parameters and quarantine procedures for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and English Learners.

District 54 will begin a partial return to in-person learning for students in some of our special education programs the week of Sept. 28. We have examined the needs of the students in those programs and based that hybrid model on those needs. Students would attend in person two mornings a week, and participate remotely the rest of the school week. Families will have the option for full remote learning. More specifics will be shared with families next week.

District 54 is also reaching out to families of students who are newcomers to the United States this year and need support as English learners. Students will come to school for 1:1 instruction provided twice a week by a bilingual resource teacher.

District 54 strongly believes that students need to return to in-person instruction as soon as it is safe and logistically possible to do so. Any reentry plan will be subject to change based on local health conditions and revised guidance provided from the state and Cook County Department of Public Health. In addition, classes may need to toggle back and forth between remote, hybrid and in-person instruction based on local health conditions and staffing availability.

Reentry metrics and models for returning to in-person learning are some of the issues being discussed at Pandemic Advisory Committee, which meets next on Sept. 29. An update on the District 54 Reopening Plan will be presented to the Board on Oct. 1.

Tomorrow is Dot Day! This day began from the book The Dot by well-known author Peter H. Reynolds. His book, The Dot, celebrates creativity, collaboration and bravery and encourages us to โ€œMake our Markโ€ no matter how small we start! Although this is a student non-attendance day, all families across the district will receive a link to a District 54 with activities and ideas. The website will have a padlet for each school where students can share a picture, post or video of their creation or act.
