Congratulations to our very own Megan King, for being this week's ! We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated teacher supporting our students and staff!

Whether she is working with an individual student or a bigger group like Club Unify, special education teacher Megan King said she finds glimmers (moments of joy) every day at Elementary School.

“With special education you put so much work in, but when you see the growth in the students it is that much more special,” she said. “If we have a student who simply greets us first in the hallway, and they’ve been working on social communication, everyone is going to stop what they are doing and applaud.”

Megan always knew she wanted to be a teacher, growing up playing school with her American Girl dolls. In high school she started volunteering at Clearbrook and Little City and realized that she wanted to support individuals with disabilities. Megan was a student teacher at Fox Elementary School in a special education classroom while attending Illinois State University. She found her home at Campanelli five years ago after graduating from college.

“I’m lucky because the people I work with here are always proactively looking at what a child needs next to continue to grow,” Megan said.

She also considers herself fortunate to get to work with small groups of students, which she feels allows her to get to know their individual needs. For example, this year Megan has implemented a “preferred praise” with each of the students she supports. This means the children get to choose how they prefer to be recognized - privately, in front of the group, through a message to their parents, etc. The focus is on what is meaningful for the child.

She also has a lot of contact with her students’ parents. One of the ways she connects with families is to survey them before they come to the school to meet with the child’s support team.

“It gets them involved because they are an important part of their child’s team,” she said. “It also lets them know we have their child’s best interests at heart.”

Megan is also a sponsor for Club Unify at Campanelli, a Special Olympics program that brings students with and without special needs together to promote respect through social activities.

“I love seeing the relationships between students,” Megan said. “We promote the message of inclusion but when you see them connect without you prompting, that’s really amazing.”

Her advice to new teachers is to focus on relationships with your co-workers, your students and their families.

“Know that everyone working with you on a team are experts in their field, so really lean into them,” she said. “Working together can only positively impact the kids.”

Our Story

Campanelli serves more than 500 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Campanelli School is a unique blend of neighborhood and open enrollment school programs. Our school community is made up of students and families in pre-school through sixth grade who participate in the general education program, the Chinese Immersion program and the District 54 Magnet program. Each of these programs offers students excellent educational opportunities as well as opportunities to make friends and develop a love of learning.

The Chinese Immersion program is developed following a 50/50 model. Students will learn to read, write, and speak in both languages while also developing a strong foundation in Chinese culture. The students will receive their instruction for Mathematics, Science, and Literacy in Chinese and will be taught Social Studies and Literacy in English.

In addition to providing an excellent education, Campanelli’s faculty offers special activities for students including the following: Cougar Council, Safety Patrols, Web Club, Homework Club, and Battle of the Books.
