Foundry Educational Foundation

Foundry Educational Foundation FEF has survived the test of time, providing the industry with a steady supply of technical and management-oriented people.

http://www.fefinc.org - FEF strengthens the metal casting industry by supporting unique partnerships among students, educators and industry, helping today's students become tomorrow's leaders. Indeed, the single largest factor for the transfer of new technology into the work place has been FEF graduates. Each year 70% or more of FEF scholarship recipients report full-time employment in metalcastin

g. In addition, many other students are exposed to the Cast Metals Industry, its products, designs, and quality engineered components. Also, research at FEF schools has become the core of important accomplishments and developments in Cast Metals. FEF provides its company contributors with a crucial link to college campuses.

NFFC takes a closer look at the creativity, curiosity and problem-solving skills on display at FEF’s Resin and Metal Mastery camp at Joliet Junior College.

These students aren’t just learning metalcasting, they’re already thinking like engineers. 👏

The lament of "kids these days..." has become common in our lexicon. Whether it's about popular trends that do not make sense (I'm looking at you, labubus), slang that is undecipherable, or their dependence on portable devices, it seems like this new generation of kids are just not up to s***f. I've...

I had the opportunity to shadow one day of the four day course, Resin and Metal Mastery, held at Joliet Junior College. This level two course, taught by Joe Costabile, is open to kids aged 13 to 17 and mixes metal casting, CAD design, and 3D printing in a way so fun, you almost forget that you are ...

Hands-On Learning Starts Early! 🔥

Two incoming University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee freshmen, Adriel and Abbigail, recently got an early introduction to materials engineering through the UR@UWM program, gaining hands-on research experience in the UWM Foundry Laboratory.

Working alongside FEF Key Professor Pradeep Rohatgi, graduate students, and undergraduate students, they experienced firsthand how engineering research moves from an initial concept to material processing, testing, and analysis. Their time in the lab included preparing molds, assisting with aluminum alloy casting research, processing metal samples, and learning the fundamentals of metallographic sample preparation.

They also used optical microscopy to examine microstructures and learned how researchers evaluate phases, porosity, reinforcement distribution, and casting defects. Beyond laboratory research, they gained practical experience with the fundamentals of metalcasting, including making a casting using a foundry-in-a-box.

Getting this kind of experience before even starting their first semester gives students an opportunity to explore the field, build technical skills, and see where a career in materials engineering and metalcasting could take them.

We’re especially excited to see that Abbigail plans to continue her research experience in the UWM Foundry this fall as a SURF student! 👏

Experiences like this give students the chance to explore metalcasting beyond the classroom and discover where their interests in engineering and research can take them. We’re excited to see where Adriel and Abbigail’s experiences at UWM lead next!

Seeing students thrive in the industry is what FEF is all about. 👏

FEF's Joe Costabile recently visited Steel Dynamics to catch up with FEF scholar and AFS Student Chapter Secretary Zach Laurent during his summer internship.

As an entering junior in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Southern University, Zach was looking to broaden his experience beyond aerospace, and found exactly that at Steel Dynamics' newly built mini foundry. From operating the R&D induction furnace to creating no-bake molds for steel production simulations, he's gained hands-on experience while discovering a passion for metallurgy.

Zach also shared some advice for students considering an internship:
"Take as much feedback as you can get, good or bad. You should even ask for feedback - it will help you solve issues much more quickly."

After this internship, Zach is now considering pursuing a master's degree in metallurgy and hopes to return to Steel Dynamics for another internship next summer.

Congratulations, Zach! We're excited to see where your journey takes you.
