Operating as usual
Students are using specific guidelines calculating surface area and volume for a cereal box that they will create using card stock tomorrow! Their collaboration and problem solving is on point this morning! Stay tuned for the actual cereal box designs!
Hrishi is our Sparky of the Week! He lives up to Martin Luther King’s quote: “The time is always right to do what is right!” Great job acting with integrity, Hrishi!
Thank you to Mr. Bott for coming in today to share about his career as a video game artist! We learned so much and appreciate his time!
Betselot is our Sparky of the Week. Betselot consistently puts in excellent effort and always has a positive attitude!
Our literature circle discussions were so rich today! Students did an amazing job discussing how specific events contributed to the development of the main character, plot, or theme, and building off of each other’s ideas!
We spent time with our buddies this afternoon reading the book, The Gruffalo and solving a hidden picture puzzle. The older buddies were amazing mentors and the younger buddies found the coordinates really well!
Reviewing facts while playing problem solving games was a nice change in math today! A highlight was hearing them apply their critical thinking skills for find the values they needed!
So impressed with the collaboration of each group for identifying connections to our essential question in each of the texts we have read in unit 4!
Mike is our Sparky of the Week for this week! He has done a great job working towards his goals and to celebrate our happiness focus of conscious acts of kindness, he is always finding ways to be kind to others.
Congratulations to Shira for being our Sparky of the Week! She has done an excellent job of putting her goal into action over the last couple of weeks!
During social studies, students researched a cultural core concept and created a mind map. Students then did a gallery walk to learn the details of each concept. Tonight they are applying these concepts to their own culture.
Collaboration at its finest in the Durchslag Den! Students are collaborating on the similarities in their research on non-renewable resources and the connections to a UN goal!
Adam is our Sparky of the Week for taking ownership of his goals!
Today we met with Mrs. Whitten’s class to help each student in her class talk through important ideas of their research project to help them begin to organize and write!
Sophia is our Sparky of the Week! She has been working hard and doing an excellent job of showing ownership and commitment towards her goals.
Congratulations to Nitsa! She is our Sparky of the Week for this week. She has done an amazing job of showing the keys of ownership and commitment in putting her best effort into learning across all subjects!

Sreejay is our Sparky of the Week for pushing himself to work towards his goals. His perseverance and commitment to his goals has been evident in all subjects!
Students are creating statues of their “legacy as a leader” after studying characteristics of great ancient civilization leaders and the characteristics of a memorial. So impressed with their creativity in sharing what they have learned!
Today in SEL, students did a great job looking at different scenarios to determine if they are examples of bullying, as well as how we could prevent a situation from happening or repair the situation!
Congratulations to Zoey for being our Sparky of the Week for exhibiting integrity and ownership this week!
For one of our PBIS booster activities, students identified commonalities with the other students in their table group and created a “team” poster to represent these similarities! These are hanging above their tables!
Students shared great ideas as they debated their side of the question: Are social classes necessary to preserve order in society? is engaging
The Durchslag Den enjoyed free choice time for earning their 80 Paws Applause reward!

We did a mini Friluftsliv to use nature to practice mindfulness. We first looked at the action of the wind and then closed our eyes to listen to the nature around us. We then did a little Fun 15 to warm up and ended with deep breathing before entering the building. #
I enjoyed listening to and and discussing events in A Christmas Carol with these 2 Socratic Circle groups today. Their ideas, conversation, and questions for discussion showed a developing understanding of processing deeper components of a text.
Our Magnet Mixer pinball machines are starting to take shape! The collaboration, creativity, and perseverance has been inspiring!
Ethan is our Sparky of the Week for this week. He has done an excellent job showing leadership skills in following our 3 Be’s as well as stepping in to help when he sees a need. He has also earned it for always being kind and respectful to everyone!
We had fun with our buddy’s in @MrsYuCI’s class today. The older buddy shared step by step directions with their younger buddy to draw a turkey and then they decorated the turkey and background!
I enjoyed seeing the smiles on each student’s face as I shared my gratitude for each student at the end of the day! Even better was the celebrating each student did for each other!

We enjoyed talking to Ms. Libby, a University of Illinois biologist, about biodiversity and our interdependent relationships in ecosystems projects. We also learned about a career as a biologist! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us Ms. Libby!
