Are we looking at one of the earliest photographs of Rye Beach, near where Rye Playland is now?

Stephen Angell, Scarsdale’s pioneer realtor and later Village Historian, left this photograph to us. He was born in 1878, and the notes say he’s in the striped hat. Since he looks about 11-12 years old, we estimate the photo dates to around 1890.

Note: the Kodak camera for amateur photographers had only had only come on the market a few years earlier, in 1888 - so this has to be a very early/rare photo.

Notes accompanying the photograph identify the location as Moore’s Pavilion, sometimes called “Mike’s,” at the end of Rye Beach and north of the present-day Rye Town Park. The amusement park wouldn’t open until 1928.

Bringing “beach schlepp” to a whole new level.

We recently uncovered this photograph in Stephen Angell’s collection, estimated to date to around 1890. Before he became one of Scarsdale’s early real estate figures, Angell was a Scarsdale kid spending a day at Rye Beach (he’s in the striped hat). This was long before the Oakland Beach bathing complex and Playland Park .

It’s labeled “Moore’s Pavilion” or “Mike’s” - maybe Rye Historical Society would know more about what that was (?!).

On this day, about a century ago…what a vibe! 🌊

This photo was found in the Scarsdale Public Library collection, and it’s labeled “Chinky Armstrong”, taken in Falmouth on August 8, 1920s (the year is cut off in the scan). That’s most likely Falmouth, MA in Cape Cod.

We have so many questions. Were they Scarsdalians vacationing on Cape Cod? Were they friends with someone in Scarsdale? There is no Armstrong in our records who matches this person…
