Calling all curious coders and future engineers! Our colleagues at the PCC Willow Creek AI Lab are hosting a free AI Robotics workshop next month, and it's a seriously cool way to learn by doing. Join them on Friday, November 6, from 9 AM to 1 PM at the WCOC AI Lab.

In this hands-on session, students program smart Waveshare AI JetBots to tackle a road-following challenge, picking up core Python, geometric calculations, and algorithmic thinking along the way. Working in teams, you'll build, test, and iterate on real Jetson Nano-powered robots, applying the same kind of problem solving that drives real-world automation. It's an introductory workshop, so no advanced experience needed, just a willingness to dig in and debug.

Who's it for? Beginner programmers and STEM students who'd rather learn Python through robotics than theory, future engineers and computer scientists, and anyone who loves collaborative, team-based problem solving. MFG Day 2026 delivered in a big way! On October 2, the PCC OMIC Training Center welcomed around 260 high school students from 12 schools and programs, traveling in from as far as the Oregon coast and Vancouver, Washington.

Students rotated through four hands-on workshops with OMIC R&D, PCC CADD/AI, the PCC OMIC Fab Lab, and PCC Welding. They ran GMAW welding beads, explored materials science and metrology, and wrote Python graphics programs with AI assistance. They even recycled 3D printing filament waste into laser-cut sheets and injection-molded figurines, using supplies funded by PCC's Eco-Social Justice Grant through the Office of Sustainability. Between workshops, they met 29 representatives from 13 industry partners out on the open manufacturing floor, including Boeing, Microchip, Columbia River Nitrogen, and Boilermakers Local 104, with Kennametal and Hangsterfer's making the trip all the way from the East Coast. Students who completed their event passport were entered in a raffle for partner-donated prizes.

Here's what one educator had to say: "Vendors were approachable, knowledgeable, friendly and so welcoming to the kids. Lots of variety, fun, and interesting activities. I've never been able to get my students to go and complete that many stations. Well done!" said Kristen Faust, at Cascade Academy/NWRESD.

Industry partners, here’s a great chance to help shape the future of your own workforce! Our colleagues at the Portland Area CTE Consortium (PACTEC) are hosting a series of CTE Regional Alignment & Advisory Symposiums this fall, and advanced manufacturing has a seat at the table.

These aren’t your typical networking events. They’re working lunches designed to give you a direct voice in aligning academic curriculum with real-world industry demands. You’ll collaborate with the region’s high school CTE teachers and PCC faculty who are preparing the next generation of your workforce. Lunch runs 11 AM to 1:30 PM and is provided, and each day is grouped by industry. For our advanced manufacturing, mechatronics, engineering, automotive, diesel, and architecture folks, mark your calendar for Thursday, October 29 at PCC Rock Creek.

PCC students, your success is about so much more than what happens in the classroom, and the Student Basic Needs Center is here to help with the rest. Whether you need groceries, help navigating benefits, or just someone to talk things through with, there's real support waiting for you.

Here's some of what the SBNC offers. The Panther Pantry lets you shop groceries online for pickup at your campus or a Panther Pick Up Locker, with 50 credits to use each month. Peer Resource Navigators can help you apply for SNAP, OHP, and other benefits, find housing and utility assistance, access the TriMet Reduced Fare Program, and build a plan that fits your life. There are also food programs like Panther Packs and Meals in the Moment, a bike rental program for just $15 a term, and emergency TriMet passes. The centers are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Cascade, Rock Creek, Southeast, and Sylvania campuses.

There's a lot happening this fall too, from FAFSA help sessions to Free Food Markets during Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week in November. No ID is needed to access food resources, just bring a bag or box to carry things home.

Curious about one of the fastest growing industries in the Pacific Northwest? Let's talk mass timber! PCC's BEAM program (Building Education in Advanced Mass Timber) is a no-cost, two-week intensive that introduces you to this emerging field, and the next cohort runs November 30 through December 11 at the Swan Island Trade Center.

Here's what makes it great. Over 60 hours of hands-on training, you'll get real skills development, industry exposure, and a clear look at where a career in mass timber can take you. Along the way you'll earn a PCC Trades Safety Micro-credential that includes OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, and Forklift certification, plus site visits, industry speakers, and connections to Clean Energy Career Coaches. Training runs Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, and because it's grant-funded, it's offered at no cost to eligible participants.

When people picture the trades, they often think welding or machining, but the skilled trades are a big, growing world, and mass timber is one of its most exciting corners. If you're looking for a hands-on career that builds a more sustainable future, this could be your way in.

Got a pair of old jeans that have seen better days? Give them a second life! Join us at the OMIC Training Center Fab Lab for a Jote Workshop, where you'll recycle worn-out denim into a fun and useful tote bag. Mark your calendar for Friday, October 9, from noon to 3 PM.

A "jote" is a tote made out of old jeans, and it's the perfect mix of practical and one-of-a-kind. Bring your own jeans if you've got them, and if not, no worries, materials are provided at no cost. We'll walk you through the whole process, so all you need to bring is your creativity.

Like all Fab Lab workshops, this one is free and open to all ages and skill levels, with no registration required. Children under 16 are welcome with adult supervision. Come turn something old into something you'll actually want to carry around!

What a year for our colleagues at PCC Professional Development and Training! Their FY26 Annual Report is out, and it's a great look at how workforce training is opening doors across Oregon.

A few highlights that stood out to us. The team trained 496 people through customized trainings and generated over $1.3 million in revenue, up 37% from the year before. Advanced manufacturing and semiconductor was their top industry served, and they launched Oregon's first-ever Microscopy Technician Training Program with Lam Research, graduating eight professionals ready for high-tech careers. They also helped power two BEAM cohorts in Oregon's growing mass timber industry, and partnered with the Urban League of Portland to run four electrical pre-apprenticeship cohorts creating pathways to family-wage trades careers.

This is the kind of work that strengthens our whole region, connecting real education to real workforce needs and building opportunity at every stage of a career. We're proud to be part of the same PCC family doing work like this!

What a day! A huge thank you to every industry partner who came out for Manufacturing Day 2026 at the PCC OMIC Training Center. Your demos, your stories, and your time made today unforgettable for the students who walked through our doors.

And what a turnout it was! We welcomed around 250 students from across the region, with schools joining us from Vancouver, Astoria, Aloha, Tigard, and the Oregon coast, right alongside our Columbia County students. Watching them strike an arc, explore the machines, and connect with real professionals is exactly why we do this. For many of them, today planted a seed that could grow into a whole career.

To our incredible industry partners and every single volunteer who made the day run: we could not have done this without you. Thank you for showing up for the next generation of manufacturing talent!
