Today the Mobile Museum on Tolerance presented to SMS students. The high school student presentation was "The Power of Ordinary People". A powerful presentation to encourage us to stand up to hate by not being a "bystander".

Geography students taught us about different religious holidays and festivals as part of the culture unit on religion. So many interesting celebrations in each religion.

Sociology class created sociologist paper dolls. The students researched an early sociologist and his/her contributions to the field of sociology. In the design of the paper doll, five symbols were added to explain the person's contributions or some other detail about the person.

Students were not familiar with paper dolls when assigned this activity. So first we talked about playing with paper dolls back in the 1970s.

Civics students researched the many different political parties in the United States. Then they created a campaign float or a cereal box to advertise the platform of the third party they had researched. The focus of the activity was to become informed about a political party before you vote for a candidate and support the party.

Rules of the Road public service posters. The students did a great job reminding us of different laws in the Illinois "Rules of the Road" book.

SMHS field trip day. Our group visited the Mississippi River Museum to learn about ecosystems and have a chance to pet the stingrays.

Plus they got to see Civil War medical tools. We had a great discussion about how many limbs the saw had probably cut off. I always love the things they remember from class.
