Monday was a fabulous day!
We gathered with 34 dedicated classroom teachers from 14 schools within Charleston and Dorchester counties who spent their summer learning through my online Implementing Multisensory Structured Literacy course. We came together for the day to deepen our knowledge through hands-on practice and review.
I am thankful for these teachers’ time and their commitment to delivering structured multisensory reading and writing instruction in their classrooms!

Here are some of the decodable chapter books that I can introduce to my students when they are early in their learning and we want to build fluency in closed syllable words with 3 sounds. These Sound Out Phonics Chapter books by High Noon Books have short chapters with great spacing, a nice illustration per chapter, and even a decodable caption. Set A-1 and A-2 are where I find my students’ favorite books from High Noon!

The feedback from our Summer Scholarship teachers has been rolling in, and we're looking forward to seeing this amazing group one more time on Monday for our final in-person training day before they begin bringing this learning into their classrooms. It's been an honor to be part of their journey, and we can't wait to see the impact they'll have on students this school year.

We want to ensure that as we are teaching and practicing concepts with our students that we always include direct and explicit instruction, understanding of the concept, and consistent practice both encoding and decoding with their new skill! Some students may need visual support as a scaffold while they learn and explain new linguistic concepts.

Here are a few more decodable chapter book recommendations! These are from Charge into Reading. These books are all 64 pages long with 9-10 short chapters. I love that each book includes phrasal scooping practice and comprehension questions for each chapter plus extra pages of literacy activities!

Why do I use manipulatives in my lessons?
Well, they are physical objects that help make the abstract concrete. Using manipulatives during phonemic awareness and spelling tasks can help students “see” the units of sound as they physically break them down. It’s hands-on practice and the blocks and marbles remain there as a visual reference which can help support students with weaker working memory.

🤖 Tob the Bot: 104 pages with 24 chapters
Zig is excited to be gifted a robot, but Tob the Bot has glitches and causes chaos. Can Tob get fixed and have a great life with Zig? This is a great starter chapter book!
💍 King's Ring: 104 pages with 27 chapters
Mick and Liv are on a class trip when a mysterious man steals the King’s Ring from the Display. They try to help the police and get tricked. What will happen now? This book is a favorite for students who love mystery and adventure!
🦕 Back to the Past : 104 pages with 22 chapters
Tim and Kim, the Kent children, go to Camp Diggin for the summer to search for
fossils. Can they help save the camp with some help from friendly dinosaurs? The is a big hit for kiddos who love dinosaurs and adventure.
📚 Back to the Past is part of a 3 part series about the Kent family. My students love being able to read a series!
The 1st book is Sam is Stuck, where the family is on a relaxing boat ride and ends up trying to save a talking fish who is stuck in the rocks.
The 2nd book is Fox Hunt where the Kent family goes camping and ends up fighting to save a fox family who is being mistreated by a mean man. This is a favorite for my students who love animals!

I love teaching closed and then open syllables with hands-ons discovery and practice with a door. I also utilize my visual support cards to help students “see” the pattern. Look at this amazing new door I just received that easily opens and closes and has magnets to hold my letters!
The visual support cards, breve and macron manipulatives, and door to help “see” open versus closed syllables all provide wonderful learning and practice for my students!
