21st Century Community Learning Centers - Savannah

21st Century Savannah is an after school program committed to helping Savannah-Chatham County Public School students in reading and math.

The purposes of 21st CCLC grants, as established by federal legislation, are:

To provide opportunities for academic enrichment and tutorial services to help students, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools, to meet state and local performance standards in core academic subjects;
To offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities to r

einforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students; and
To offer families of 21st CCLC students opportunities for literacy and related educational development. Program Design focuses on:

Meeting identified deficiencies in reading and math through use of an engaging curriculum and filling the gaps in academic success rates between African American and white children:
Sessions/activities appropriate to student’s age and ability level
Engaging, hands-on activities
Family reading and activity books and kits to be used in the home
Academic enrichment in core academic areas
Field trips
Visual and performing arts activities
Additional services, programs, activities to further reinforce and complement students’ regular academic program
Cultural affairs activities such as summer Shakespeare workshop, African drumming
Cultural events field trips
Team building, conflict resolution, mediation skills, recreational activities
Career connections
Motivational speakers
Social services and referrals
Site specific opportunities for literacy and related educational development will be provided for families of participating students
Interactive activities, workshops, family night literacy activities, counseling and referrals
Parents learn importance of early literacy skills and how to assist literacy development of their children
Saturday field trips to promote quality family time
Literacy activities with libraries and media centers
Parent University sessions at 21st CCLC sites
