Parallel play is more social than it looks.

Two toddlers may be side by side, each focused on their own toys, with barely a word between them. But a lot of learning can be happening. They’re watching, imitating, exploring, communicating. And getting more comfortable sharing space with other children.

For early childhood professionals, these everyday moments can offer a window into a child’s social, language, cognitive and motor development.

And an important reminder: stages of play aren’t rigid deadlines. Children may move between different types of play depending on the activity, setting and people around them.

Raising child care ratios is supposed to save money. For many providers, it's doing the opposite.

When states raise child-to-staff ratios, insurance companies take notice. More children per teacher means more risk in their eyes, and many providers now face sharply higher premiums or lose coverage entirely. A 2024 survey found that about 80 percent of child care providers saw their liability insurance costs rise in just one year.

Cutting corners on ratios doesn't make child care cheaper to run. It just shifts the cost from staffing to insurance, and providers already running on thin margins are the ones left holding the bill.
