Repost from our Tiger’s Roar editor in chief .gracee - I am so happy but sad to say that my time on the campus of Howard University has come to an end. After attending the Du Bois Data Lab, hosted by the I can truly say I have grown as a journalist. I have learned so many new skills on how to collect data, present data, and most importantly how to report as well as building a story around the data. It was a true honor to represent the Savannah State University.

From touring the Bloomberg News office to visiting the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, this program is one I suggest to all college students in the media field.

On April 8, Savannah State University’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications had a great time participating in Career Day at Gadsden Elementary School. Speaking to and engaging with nearly 400 incredible children was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to share how we serve our community through television broadcasting. The future is bright! Some of the youth were not camera shy and had some very engaging interview questions. Thank you to Ms. Anita Taylor for the invitation to pour into these young lives! Participating were the department chair Dr. Juliana Trammel, multimedia technician Jeffery Glover, and Tiger's Roar newspaper advisor Kareem McMichael.

Congratulations to our JMC student Christian Elahee and our department chair Dr. Juliana Maria Trammel on the success of their pilot project, "IMMERSIVE VR: Virtual Reality Simulations for Job Interview Skill Development," which was recently showcased at the 2026 Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) at Savannah State University.

This innovative study utilized Meta Quest 2 headsets and the VirtualSpeech app to provide students with a private, low-pressure environment to refine their elevator pitches and job interview techniques. By leveraging AI analytics to provide real-time feedback on vocal delivery and eye contact, the researchers found that students experienced increased engagement and a significant boost in professional communication confidence.

The early success of this initiative highlights the potential for VR to serve as a scalable, high-impact tool in academic programs, effectively bridging the gap between classroom learning and career readiness.

What an incredible day of growth at Savannah State University as the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications hosted The Marketing Bridge workshop! It was truly inspiring to see 15 local nonprofits and small businesses collaborating directly with our talented PR and marketing students in the King-Frazier Ballroom.

This successful event wouldn't have been possible without the leadership of Shani Green, Nyla Skipper, and the SSU PRSSA chapter, as well as the invaluable expertise shared by Tara Nobles of United Way and Marjorie Young of Carriage Trade Public Relations®. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world impact through strategic planning and internship matching.
