My name is Robin Clark and I have a passion for restoring photographs that are a part of our history. I started my professional life when I joined the US Army in 1978 and was trained in photolithography at the Defense Mapping School (DMS) at Ft. It was at the DMS that I was introduced to the printing and graphics world. After a brief time in the private sector, I joined the Central Intelligence Ag

This is one of the most personal photographs I've found in the Wiley J. Ramsey collection from Gainesville, Georgia.
The woman in the portrait is Susie Mae Queen Ramsey, wife of photographer Wiley J. Ramsey (1881–1964). I recognized Susie Mae from other photographs throughout the collection, but the identity of the child remained a mystery until I noticed written on the negative was a single name, Juanita.
That small notation transformed this image from a beautiful family portrait into an identified moment in the Ramsey family's history.
Without that name, I would never have known which of Wiley and Susie Mae's children was being held in her mother's arms.
Looking at the photograph today, it's impossible not to feel the weight of what came later. Juanita V. Ramsey was born in 1915 and tragically died in 1926 at only 11 years old.
More than a century ago, Wiley Ramsey photographed his wife and daughter in what must have seemed like an ordinary moment. Today, that image survives as both a family treasure and a poignant reminder of how fragile life could be.
Restored and colorized from an original tintype in my collection, this portrait captures four young men from California, Ohio, in the 1890s. Among them was Chas Scott, whose name was preserved on the original tintype along with references to the Ruffin family.
Chas Scott’s story is as compelling as the photograph itself. After losing both of his parents, he was raised by Eleanor Ruffin alongside his cousins Emma and Pearl Ruffin. More than a century later, this small piece of metal survived to tell their story.

A sharp studio portrait featuring a three-piece suit, patterned tie, and pocket watch chain. From the Waynesboro, Pennsylvania studio of William J. E. Collins, early 1900s.
Many of you followed along as I held a contest to choose a photograph to add to a Joseph E. Williams’ contact frames from his New Athens, Ohio studio. The winning image now has a home in that frame.
What I haven’t shared is that I also have a second Williams contact frame.
Unlike the first, this one wasn’t empty. Inside was an American Aristo product and price list that Williams had placed there more than a century ago. Rather than remove it and insert a photograph, I decided to leave it exactly as I found it.
The list offers a glimpse into the business side of photography and serves as a reminder that these frames were working tools in Williams’ studio. While photographs often tell the stories we expect, sometimes the objects left behind tell stories of their own.
For that reason, this frame will remain just as Williams left it.
