Hoghead and Prosperity

A popular tale about Hoghead and peas:

"During the period of slavery Old Marster always kept a little boy to watch the pot on the stove while the family attended church. So when they went away to church this Sunday they had a new boy, so they told him, “When all the peas go to the bottom, the dinner is done. So you watch the peas, John.” So the little boy start playing and forgot about the peas. So when he did take a look the peas had all gone to the bottom, and the hoghead mouth had opened. And two or three peas passing across the mouth. All he knew he was going to get a good beating if all them peas were gone. So he lit out for church. When he got to church he ran in with both hands up and mouth open, calling, “Oh Marster, oh Marster. That hogshead done ate all those peas and got his mouth open trying to catch them two or three bubbling round on top.”

The custom of Jowls and black-eyed peas and medical use:

"Jowls are mostly for seasoning and taste. They go up to the jawbone. The marrow is good for the mumps. You eat jowls and black-eyed peas the first of January, for luck. Colored people do that all over. My wife was taught that if they kill a hog in the fall of the year, they shouldn’t sell the head, but keep it for jowls."

Originally it was said that it's lucky to eat hoghead and black eyed peas on New Year's day not just black eyed peas.
Oil is made from jowls an anointed on the jaws to soothe the symptoms of mumps.
