The Wildflower ELC woods are turning green. Today we marked native and non-native plants on the wildlife habitat trail. We found wild leek, pulled and smelled garlic mustard, saw the interesting leaves of the bloodroot plant, aunt lucy, virginia creeper, and even a young hackberry tree! Happy exploring!

Today, a Wildflower student brought in a paper wasp nest she found near her home. We put it under the microscope to observe the colors and the thickness and shape of the cells. As we moved it under the microscope we were surprised when we found a deceased wasp! The young wasp was somewhere between the pupae stage and the adult stage. The temperature and humidity inside the nest is very important to their development.

What a special find and a great learning opportunity. Paper wasps begin to build their nests in May then in the fall, they leave their nest to hibernate for winter. The cells are a hexagon shape for maximum strength. The cells are like cribs where the wasps develop from an egg to a pupae, to an adult. Nests are only used for one season. Each spring the queen and other adult wasps will build their nest from wood fibers and saliva.
