This drone footage, captured by our Cetacean Conservation Biology Scientist, Gina Lonati, Ph.D., provided a real-time aerial perspective during the successful disentanglement of a humpback whale in Monterey Bay earlier this month! 🐋

The footage allowed the team to see the whale's behavior, entanglement location and the type of gear involved so that they could safely assess the changing situation and develop the best response strategy. Drone technology like this is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for entanglement response because, when used as was done here, it increases the chance of a successful outcome 💪

This new tool is not a replacement for the expertise and judgment gained through years of specialized training and experience, but an enhancement that improves responder safety, minimizes animal disturbance and gives entangled animals the best chance at swimming freely once more 🌊

We're proud to have been an important part of this disentanglement effort, led by our partners at NOAA Fisheries West Coast, Monterey Bay Marine Life Studies, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and others. Another critical component? The call! ☎️ This whale, known as “The Duchess of Anchovy,” is swimming free again thanks to initial alerts made by the Monterey Bay whale watch fleet 💙
