To a preschooler, deconstructing nature is a high-level lesson in structural anatomy and hand-eye coordination.

Think about the sensory feedback and precision required to:
🤏 Isolate the Pincer Grasp: Pinching a microscopic stem without bruising it.

⚖️ Calibrate Force: Pulling a fragile petal just hard enough to detach it from the receptacle, but gently enough not to tear the delicate tissue.

🫳 Bi-Lateral Coordination: Using one hand to anchor the flower body while the dominant hand executes a precise, calculated twist.

Through this tactile investigation, children are building the exact muscle stamina, spatial awareness, and visual tracking needed for writing and using complex tools later on. They are breaking down a whole living structure into its individual variables, transforming nature into a classified palette of shapes.

The next time you see a child dismantling a dandelion or a rose, remember: you are witnessing a scientist mapping out the mechanics of the world right in the middle of our classroom. 🤍

Let’s talk about the magic of the imprint. 🔬✨

When my students press a fresh flower or leaf into a wet gel plate, they aren’t just making a stamp—they are exploring negative space. They have to wrap their minds around a beautiful contradiction: when you remove the flower, the space it leaves behind is where the new story begins.

By painting inside the hollow ghost-image left by nature, the children practice incredible spatial awareness and fine motor control. They are learning that a shape left behind can become a brand-new form. Look closely at the depth of these textures!

And just like that, the studio doors are closing on our annual exhibition… 🚪✨

As I begin to carefully taking down our documentation panels and packing away our interactive displays, my heart is incredibly full.

This exhibition was a beautiful testament to what happens when we view children not just as students, but as scientists, authors, engineers, and researchers.

Taking down a show is always bittersweet, but it is also a vital part of our rhythm. These walls are blank once again, ready and waiting for the next wave of child-led inquiry. The botanical prints, the self-portraits, and the giant tape ball meteorite are heading home to become permanent treasures, but the confidence, the collaboration, and the critical thinking the children developed here are staying right with them.

Now, we shift our focus, pack up the classroom and get ready for a brand-new adventure. ☀️🎒

I officially transition from our school year investigations into the wild, messy, hands-on wonder of Summer Camp! Get ready for ten weeks of child-led projects, outdoor exploration, and fresh creative challenges running three days a week. The classroom space is transforming, the sun is shining, and a whole new season of discovery is about to begin.

Thank you to every family who made this school year and our exhibition so deeply magical. Camp season, we are ready for you! 🪵🌿🎨

Setting the stage for deep inquiry and wonder. 🌿🧠

When the children are away, the educator goes hunting for loose parts! This week’s haul was all about finding safe, real-world tools and open-ended materials that invite problem-solving, engineering, and pure creative joy.

We are bringing real tools to the sandbox with wooden grout smoothers, launching major pipeline and ball-run investigations on the hill with PVC pipes and connectors, and keeping it all organized with some incredible under-$3 durable bin finds. 🛠️🔀

An environment filled with open-ended materials teaches children how to think, not what to think. I already tested the grout float at home (guilty! 🎉) and I absolutely cannot wait to see how the children transform these spaces next week.

Blank canvases and endless possibilities! 🌿✨

Here’s a sneak peek at our outdoor learning environment before the magic happens. Right now, the sandbox, rock garden, mud kitchen, sensory table, and our favorite rolling hill are completely empty. The children are away, which means it’s my turn to play! 🛒🕵️‍♂️

This week, I’m hunting for new materials to intentionally stage these spaces and set up provocations that will invite deep, child-led exploration.

The countdown to the end of the year is on, which means exhibit prep is officially underway.

This year is incredibly special because it’s my 12th time hosting an exhibit showcasing the children’s incredible journey of discovery. Looking back at these photos from our 2019 exhibit reminds me that while the children and the projects change, the magic of child-led inquiry never does. 🤗
