On Friday, November 19, the Putnam Problem Solving group showed that A googolplex + a googol + 99 is not a prime number. The team made considerable progress toward showing that for all whole numbers n, 10^(10^(10^n))) + 10^(10^n) + 10^n - 1 is not prime (problem A4 from 2010).

On Friday, October 29, mathematics seminar hosted Dr. Rowe of Northern Michigan University. Dr. Rowe gave an overview of Northern's new Master's program in mathematics and then presented on loops satisfying identities of the Bol-Moufang type.

On Friday, November 12, the Lake State Mathematics Seminar will meet in CAS 207 at 4:00 to hear a talk by Dr. George Voutsadakis on the problem of P = NP? The P = NP? problem is one of the seven millennium problems, announced by the Clay Mathematics Institute in 2000 as seven of the most important problems in mathematics. Dr. Voutsadakis will give an overview of the history and philosophy of this problem.
