MCAN is currently hiring a college adviser for our AdviseMI program. This adviser will be serving Port Huron Northern High School. Please spread the word to recent graduates (Bachelor's) you know who are interested in stepping into the college access field.
The AdviseMI program embeds well-trained, dedicated, near-peer college advisers in high schools that serve significant numbers of low-income and first generation college-going students. Advisers will commit to a term of service beginning immediately upon hire through June 2016. In an effort for the Advisers to be fully enmeshed in the fabric of the local communities, Advisers are expected to live in the community in which they are assigned.

MCAN is excited to announce that over the last six weeks, we have hired 37 advisers to serve 47 high schools throughout Michigan! We are still looking to place an additional 3 advisers to serve 3 more communities. Advisers will commit to a term of service beginning July 2015 through June 2016. These appointments include a mandatory four-week training session in East Lansing beginning July 6th. In an effort for the Advisers to be fully enmeshed in the fabric of the local communities, Advisers are expected to live in the community in which they are assigned. We currently have openings in Northern Michigan, Southeast Michigan, and Southwest Michigan.

Join the Thankful for Pell Campaign this November!

Last academic year, over 9 million students benefited from receiving a federal Pell Grant. Without this support from the federal government, many low-income students would not be able to pursue their a college degree or credential. Because of this profound impact on higher education, the members and partners of the National College Access Network are joining together this November to say we are Thankful for Pell!

This campaign is a great opportunity to share a positive message with your elected officials: Pell Grants are a vital part of our country's plan to help students pursue their educational dreams.

Would you like to participate? There are several ways you can get involved including on social media, writing to your elected official, and/or meeting with your elected official.

Social Media Campaign: - November 17 - 20

Share with the world - as well as Congress - the importance of the Pell Grant to you and/or your students. Participate in the campaign using and be sure to tag your Senators' social media handles and Representative's social media handles in your tweets and posts. Everyone participating can use these sample posts and change their photo. Share these widely with partners and students to participate as well!

Write a Letter to Elected Officials

Another important, and less public, way to communicate with Congress is through a letter. NCAN recommends using the contact forms on each elected officials' website to send a personalized note. Be sure to include why and how the Pell Grant helps you or your students pursue their educational dreams. NCAN members can access a helpful guide here, but everyone is encouraged to send a letter.

Meet with Your Elected Official

You don't have to travel to Washington, DC, to meet with your elected official or one of his/her staff members. NCAN suggests leaders of college access organizations contact their Senators and Representative in November to schedule December or January meetings to discuss the importance of federal financial aid, specifically the Pell Grant program. NCAN Members can access helpful guidance here.

Attention Prospective AmeriCorps Members,

Greetings! We are emailing you to let you know about a unique AmeriCorps program currently recruiting for a limited number of members. The Backcountry Trails Program of the California Conservation Corps will be fielding six crews of young Men & Women (18 to 26 years old), to spend 5 ½ months building and maintaining trails in Wilderness areas throughout California’s State & National Parks and National Forests. We are contacting you based on your expressed interest in AmeriCorps programs.

The Backcountry Trails Program provides participants with intense challenges on a daily basis from grueling labor and long hikes at high altitudes in adverse weather conditions carrying heavy packs; to the spartan living conditions far from the luxuries and conveniences of modern life; to the dynamic social situation of a small crew of highly diverse people in an isolated setting. Despite this, Crew members who complete a Backcountry season consistently describe the experience as both a grand adventure and a great accomplishment in their life.

Job duties include trail maintenance of drainage systems and tread, clearance of brush, fallen logs, boulders and other debris, etc.; repair and construction of drainage and erosion control structures; and repair and re-vegetation of damaged sites and restoration of habitat values. Crew members are trained in historic skills of log construction and dry stone masonry using on-site materials (timber & stone). Tasks include digging, moving materials weighing 50 – 1000 pounds, crushing stone for backfill using 8-16 pound sledge hammers (for hours or even days at a time), as well as building retaining walls, waterbars, soil retainers, stone paving, & stairways.

The Backcountry Trails Program is governed by rules and structure, often at the expense of personal choice and freedom. This is a regimented program with very little free time or unsupervised time. Beyond the 8 hour work day crew members are expected to participate in camp chores, prepping meals, physical training, more chores, and nightly curriculum. The curriculum program includes natural history, wilderness education, career development, community building, literature and much more. Weekends are spent hiking, exploring, and mountaineering in the surrounding area. High levels of motivation, self-discipline and emotional maturity are essential.

Members cannot be on probation or parole and are subject to criminal background checks and drug screenings. We are a drug and alcohol free program. Salary is $1392 / month minus a $325 commissary fee for food. Successful completion of 900 hours of service work earns a $2,675 education award upon completion of the season.

There are approximately 100 positions available serving in Kings Canyon & Yosemite National Parks, Big Basin State Park, and on the Klamath, Shasta-Trinity, Inyo & Stanislaus National Forests.

Attendees were served a complimentary lunch courtesy of several community organizations and local businesses. Adding a holiday touch, Santa Claus was on hand giving out gifts to all the children.

For anyone who is interested in becoming a College Positive Volunteer, we will be holding one hour training sessions this week at the Native American Center on Tuesday at 4pm, Wednesday at 4 and 7 pm, Thursday at 4 and 7 pm, and Friday at 1pm. It is a one time training and afterwards you are officially a CPV! You even get a semi-fancy certificate!
