The Story of Lake Superior Academy

For eleven years (2004 -2015) the EUP Learning Center offered after school support for students who struggled to meet the academic requirements of their school’s classroom. During these eleven years, it was demonstrated and well-documented that over 80% of students who needed the extra support, flourished when the instructor used a kinesthetic (hands-on/movement

) approach to presenting the material. Students who initially came in the door saying they felt, “stupid” because they just couldn’t get it, left with confidence in themselves and the ability to understand and retain new concepts. Parents repeatedly asked, “Why can’t this type of teaching be used in the regular classroom?” Montessori schools do just that. They teach the same academic concepts using a completely hands-on, concrete approach to instruction. Students with any learning style learn in this environment, but the style of instruction allows students who cannot learn and retain without movement the opportunity to keep up and maintain academic progress with traditional learners. Montessori schools have been traditionally offered only in the private sector of education in rather affluent communities. These schools require very high tuition which could not be maintained in our local economy. The only possible way to offer a Montessori option in the Eastern Upper Peninsula was to establish a Charter School that could offer a tuition-free alternative for local families. And that is how Lake Superior Academy came into existence in our community.

Court Update — The Fight Continues

We want to share an important update regarding our ongoing court case concerning the bitcoin operation next to Lake Superior Academy.

Our next hearing was scheduled for Monday, August 17, but it has once again been postponed following another motion filed by the defendant. The hearing has now been rescheduled for:

Monday, September 21, 2026
1:30 p.m.

We will be honest—this continued delay is frustrating. Our students, staff, families, and neighbors have already lived with the impact of this operation for far too long, and each postponement extends a process we desperately want to see resolved.
But we are not giving up.

If anything, these delays make it even more important that we continue to stand together. The tremendous community support we have received—especially from those who have taken the time to join us in the courtroom—has made a difference. Your presence sends a powerful message that this issue matters and that our children and our school are worth fighting for.

So, we are asking you once again: Please mark September 21 on your calendar and stand with us if you are able.

We may be frustrated. We may be tired of waiting. But we remain committed, and we will continue this fight for as long as it takes.

There are moments when simply showing up makes all the difference.

Today was one of those days.

To everyone who took time away from work, family, and your busy schedules to stand with Lake Superior Academy in court, thank you. Looking around the courtroom and seeing so many people there for our children was incredibly moving.

The judge's response today gave us hope, and I truly believe your presence helped demonstrate that this isn't just LSA's fight—it is a community's fight to protect a peaceful learning environment for children.

We still have work to do.

Our next court hearing is Monday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. If you are able, we would be honored to have you stand with us again.

Every voice matters and every child deserves to learn without the constant roar of industrial noise.
