When I began helping adults prepare for the U.S. citizenship process, I quickly realized that many people were not only worried about the test.

They were also afraid.

Afraid their English was not good enough.

Afraid they might fail.

Afraid they would not understand the process.

And sometimes, afraid they could not trust the people offering to help.

That is why I created The Confident Citizen.

My goal is not simply to teach civics questions or English vocabulary. I want people who feel scared, overwhelmed, or unsure to believe they can become U.S. citizens, and I want to walk beside them through the process.

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."

Those words have stood at the feet of the Statue of Liberty for generations, reminding the world that immigrants and their dreams of a better life are what this country was built on . Today, I want my immigrant students and community to know that same promise still lives in the hearts of many of us.

I live and teach in Minnesota, and so many of you have shared how afraid you feel right now. Afraid to leave your homes. Afraid to come to class. Afraid of what might happen to your families. I am so sorry you are feeling this way and wish I could do more to help.

But, for now, please hear this clearly: you matter. You are valued. You belong here more than you may realize. Many Americans deeply appreciate immigrants and recognize the strength, work ethic, culture, and love you bring to this country every single day.

Many people, including me, care about you and appreciate the wonderful people you are. Please be gentle with yourselves. Protect your peace where you can. And remember that there are people standing with you, even when things feel uncertain.
