Our topic this week is President Chester Arthur. Unhappy with the look of the White House, he hired Louis Comfort Tiffany to refurbish many rooms. This Tiffany glass screen was installed in the Entrance Hall, seen here in a photo, and a painting by Peter Waddell. It was removed in 1902.

Historical Quote Day

This week’s topic is President Chester Arthur, who came to office upon the assassination of James Garfield. Arthur had been a participant in corrupt NY politics, but as president he served honorably, becoming widely respected. A former colleague noted:

“He’s no longer Chet Arthur…he is the President.”

Today in History

He became US President after James Garfield was fatally shot just months into his term. Sworn into office on Sept. 20, 1881, Chester Arthur had been part of the corrupt New York political machine, but as president he did an about-face, actually championing civil-service reform. A man of fashion in garb and socializing, the “Gentleman Boss” hired Louis Comfort Tiffany to refurbish the White House.

Historical Quote Day

This week’s topic is apartheid, instituted in South Africa by Hendrik Verwoerd. Nelson Mandela fought against the racist policies, writing to Verwoerd in June 1961:

“…no power on earth can stop an oppressed people, determined to win their freedom. History punishes those who resort to force and fraud to suppress the claims and legitimate aspirations of the majority of the country's citizens.”

Today in History

It was called Grand Apartheid, implemented by South African Prime Minister Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd. Undaunted by international condemnation of the racist policies, he instituted a system of “separate development,” relegating blacks to “traditional homelands” and stripping them of their rights. Verwoerd was stabbed to death on Sept. 6, 1966 by Demetrio Tsafendas, later found mentally unfit for trial.

Today in History

No, there has never been a red phone in the Oval Office. The hotline from Washington DC to Moscow was a system installed in the Pentagon and began operating on Aug. 30, 1963. It seemed a good idea after the Cuban Missile Crisis the year before. Cumbersome by today’s instant communication standards, it allowed emergency messages between the Kremlin and the White House to take minutes instead of hours.

This week’s topic is Louis XVI, sentenced to death as the French Revolution swelled. Priest Henry Essex Edgeworth accompanied the king to his ex*****on & described his bravery in approaching the guillotine:

“…three guards surrounded him, and would have taken off his clothes, but he repulsed them with haughtiness - he undressed himself, untied his neckcloth, opened his shirt, & arranged it himself.”

He was the last monarch of Versailles. Louis XVI was not expected to be king; when he was born on Aug. 23, 1754 he had two older brothers, but with their early deaths, Louis inherited the throne at the age of 20. The reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette ushered in the storming of the Bastille and the French Revolution. Both of their lives came to a tragic end at the guillotine before Louis was 40.
