Let’s make it another great week of training at Saugus Karate !!

Today we remember Bill Gray on what would have been his 100th birthday.

If you met Bill even once, you wouldn’t forget him. A natural salesman, he could walk into any room and immediately command attention. Charismatic, charming, and above all, genuine.

I first met him 45 years ago when I was 11 at the old dojo on Route 1. I remember my age because someone asked Bill how old he was, and with that unforgettable smile and deep voice he said, “I’m a double nickel”—55 years old.

From those early days, what stood out just as much as Bill himself were his stories. I loved hearing about his business Gray’s Appliances in Melrose, his family, and the many experiences he had.

From 1988 to 2014, I had the privilege of being Bill’s karate instructor. Every Monday at 12:00 p.m., my first lesson of the week was always with him. Those sessions became far more than training—they were conversations, stories, a quick ride in his newest luxury vehicle to get a coffee and a friendship I will always value.

It was truly an honor to know Bill as both my student and my friend.

Happy 100th Birthday, Wild Bill.

Summer camp 2026 is a wrap!!! What an awesome group of Saugus Karate students !!! Very well behaved ( as we expected) and completely engaged from start to finish !!! Can’t wait for next summer !!! A special thanks to Renshi Brianna and Her Assistant Black Belt Instructor Michael P for all their help and encouragement during camp .

Day 1 of Summer Camp is in the books !! Our Campers worked hard , learned new skills and had a lot of fun along the way !! Great job by all ! We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week has in store!

We are excited for summer camp !! Reminder that camp starts tomorrow 10:00-5:00 and all group classes are at their regularly scheduled time all week.
