Mudd Day on December 20th annually recognizes the birthday of Dr. Samuel Mudd, a man whose name was mud after his dealings with one man.



After assassinating Lincoln on April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth rode with co-conspirator David Herold to Dr. Samuel Mudd’s home in the early hours of the 15th before crossing into Virginia. Mudd performed surgery on Booth’s fractured leg and allowed both men to stay the night. At some point, Mudd must have learned of the assassination. However, he did not report Booth’s visit to the authorities for another 24 hours. This delay appeared to link him to the crime, as did his various changes of the story under interrogation. On April 26th, authorities arrested Mudd. A military commission found him guilty of aiding and conspiring in a murder and sentenced Mudd to life imprisonment. He escaped the death penalty by a single vote.

Dr. Mudd’s name has been dragged through the mud since his sentencing giving the term “your name is mud” a whole new meaning.

A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.



Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.

On December 18th, National Twin Day celebrates all the siblings who enjoy the unique connection because they share a birthday.



Whether fraternal or identical, twins share everything right from the beginning. While their personalities may be different, they often know what the other is going to say before the words are spoken. Distance isn’t an issue either. Twins manage to stay connected across the country or around the globe.

A special tribute to my twin granddaughters, Belle and Madeline, born on December 29, 2009, and their mother, Jac. We often forget about the mothers of multiple births and the challenge it is for them.

Get the flapjacks ready for National Maple Syrup Day. December 17th calls for orders of pancakes, french toast, or biscuits topped off with butter and delicious maple syrup.



It is usually from the xylem sap of sugar maple, red maple, or black maple trees that maple syrup is made from although it is not limited to those maple species.

These trees, in cold climates, store starch in their trunks and in their roots. In the spring, the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap. The maple trees are then tapped by boring holes into their trunks and the released sap is collected. After the sap is collected, it is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.

Chocolate lovers rejoice on National Chocolate Covered Anything Day! December 16th offers the chocolate day you've been waiting for. On this day, dip and drizzle your favorite foods in every kind of chocolate imaginable.



If you could cover anything in chocolate, what would it be? So many foods improve when we dip them in chocolate. Many businesses build their foundation on the practice of dipping food into chocolate. Whether you pick up a chocolate fountain or order a bouquet of a beautiful arrangement of chocolate-dipped fruit, celebrate!

Honoring an instrument also known as the fiddle, National Violin Day on December 13th celebrates the bow stringed instrument loved around the world.



By drawing the bow across the strings, the violinist manipulates the sound in several ways. A violinist uses numerous bowing techniques to master the violin. The strokes dictate not only notes, but the quality of the note played.

Gingerbread House Day on December 12th recognizes a family tradition for many around the country.



I love gingerbread, so I was excited for my students to experience this during the holiday season…

BUT, gingerbread houses are hard to build… or is that just me?

As much as I like gingerbread, I don’t like wasting it on something that won’t get eaten. Or, again, is that just me? Do you eat your gingerbread houses?

So I thought I’d use this “holiday everyday” to suggest some alternatives. Last year, we had a graham cracker competition where each grandchild designed their own house out of graham crackers and frosting out of a can. All of the candy was in the middle of the table, and they could use what they wanted to decorate them once they assembled them. The results were pretty awful, but they all had fun (I think).

This year, on social media I saw someone use whole wheat bread. She toasted it and removed the crusts. She used spaghetti noodles to pin the pieces together.

There are lots of ways to build a house to add to your Christmas celebration. What ideas do you have?
