BSN RECRUITING: SATELLITE SENIOR BRADY ROBERTS COMMITS TO DIVISION I STETSON UNIVERSITY
For the better part of six years, Brady Roberts has dreamed of playing Division I college baseball. Now, the Satellite Scorpions senior can stop dreaming about whether that opportunity will come.
He knows exactly where he is headed. Roberts has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Stetson University, where the Hatters project one of Brevard County’s top two-way players as a center fielder with the potential to hit in the middle of their lineup.
“Playing Division I baseball has been a dream of mine for at least the past six years,” Roberts told BSN. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and we’re all beyond grateful.”
The commitment is the culmination of a baseball journey that began when Roberts was just five years old playing T-ball. He spent the next seven years at Beachside Little League before entering the travel-ball circuit at 11.
Roberts played with Upper Deck from 11U through 15U and later competed with Canes Florida and Freshwater Storm before playing this summer with the Orlando Scorpions.
It was his time with the Orlando Scorpions that ultimately helped create the opportunity he had been working toward.
“My Orlando Scorpions coach had been in contact with Coach Gierke over the summer and kept him updated on my season,” Roberts said. “Coach Brewer, the recruiting coordinator, attended the Scorpions Showcase and saw me there. That afternoon, they offered, and we visited Stetson later the same week.”
Sometimes during the recruiting process, an athlete needs several visits or countless conversations before finding the right fit.
For Roberts, it didn’t take long.
“The first time I visited, we went to see the field and something seemed right about it, like I could imagine playing there,” Roberts said. “I really liked all of the coaches and the facilities. There were really no negative aspects.”
That feeling extended beyond Stetson’s facilities.
Although Roberts visited before the Hatters players had arrived on campus and therefore didn’t have an opportunity to experience the team culture firsthand, his conversations with the coaching staff left a lasting impression.
“I was able to speak with all of the coaching staff and feel that my outlook on baseball completely matches theirs,” Roberts said. “I felt they were interested in me, not just as a player, but as a person too.”
There is certainly plenty to like about Roberts as a baseball player.
During his junior season at Satellite, Roberts captured the Scorpions’ Triple Crown, leading the team with a .374 batting average, 4 home runs and 23 RBIs.
His production went well beyond those three categories.
Roberts collected a team high 34 hits, eight doubles and two triples, while finishing second on the team with 10 stolen bases. He reached base at a .467 clip and posted a .514 slugging percentage and .981 OPS.
For his high school career, Roberts enters his senior season as a .351 hitter and his impact hasn’t been limited to the batter’s box or outfield.
Roberts was also an important piece of Satellite’s pitching staff last season, going 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA across 11 appearances. In 24⅓ innings, he struck out 21 hitters while walking just nine.
That versatility has helped establish Roberts as one of Brevard County’s top two-way players, but his collegiate future appears destined for the outfield.
Stetson’s staff has told Roberts it sees him developing into a middle-of-the-order center fielder, a role that fits the combination of power, speed and run-producing ability he has displayed at Satellite.
Roberts describes himself a little differently.
“I would describe myself as a scrappy leadoff hitter that can hit for power,” he told BSN. “I try to stay level-headed no matter what the circumstance. One of the things that separates me from other players is my speed, both in the outfield and while hitting.”
That combination has allowed Roberts to impact games in several ways, and when asked what gives him the most confidence, he pointed directly to two important offensive traits.
“My ability to create runs and limit strikeouts gives me the most confidence,” Roberts said.
But earning a Division I commitment hasn’t convinced him that his development is finished.
Far from it. Roberts knows there are areas he wants to sharpen before arriving at Stetson, particularly defensively.
“I think I could improve some aspects of my outfield game,” he said.
That desire to continue developing is also one reason Roberts was comfortable making his college decision now. Rather than allowing the recruiting process to become a distraction, he can turn his attention toward getting better and completing his final season at Satellite.
“I wanted to commit now because I really feel Stetson is the right choice for me,” Roberts said. “As for moving forward, I will continue to improve my game.”
Academically, Roberts hasn’t settled on a specific major but said he is interested in pursuing something connected to sports.
“I’m really not sure what I want to study at this point, but I am definitely interested in a sports-related major,” Roberts said. “Stetson is a great academic school where I think I’ll find academic success too.”
Before Roberts trades Satellite colors for Stetson’s green and white, however, there is still plenty he wants to accomplish as a Scorpion.
And some significant milestones are within reach.
“One of my main individual goals this year is to reach the 100 career hits and 10 home runs mark,” Roberts said. “For the team, I would love for us to win a district championship and get a regional win.”
Those goals would add to a collection of baseball memories that began long before anyone was talking about college recruiting.
Ask Roberts about his favorites, and his mind goes back to where so much of his journey began.
“There are so many great memories, but one of my top ones is hitting my first home run at 11 years old in Vero Beach,” he said.
A close second came much more recently.
“Hitting two home runs in one game against Martin County this past spring season.”
The home runs, statistics and Division I commitment tell part of Roberts’ story.
But as is the case with nearly every athlete who reaches this level, there are countless people behind those accomplishments whose names don’t appear in the box score.
Roberts is quick to acknowledge them.
“I would first like to thank my parents for all the time, money and effort they put into me in order to achieve my goals,” Roberts said. “I would also like to thank Coach Gaudy, Coach P, Coach Goodrich and Coach Bradley for helping me with the recruitment process. And lastly, Coach Gierke, Coach Brewer and the rest of the Stetson coaching staff for giving me a chance.”
His list goes even deeper when Roberts looks back over the entirety of his baseball journey.
“When I first started playing Little League, one of my friend’s dads coached me, Coach Mike Seal,” Roberts said. “He helped me understand the basics of the game.”
From there, different coaches helped build different pieces of the player Roberts would eventually become.
“I also had Coach Joel and Coach Gerry, who helped me build on my foundations from Little League,” he said. “Coach Jason really helped me develop my swing. Coach P from Satellite helped my pitching and outfield once I got to high school. And Coach Gaudy all around helped me develop into a Division I athlete.”
Each coach added something.
Each season added another layer.
And all those practices, games, travel tournaments, at-bats, innings and lessons eventually led Roberts to a college baseball field in DeLand, where he stood during his visit and could suddenly picture himself playing there.
Soon enough, he will.
But first, there is one final season at Satellite — one more opportunity to chase 100 career hits, reach double-digit career home runs, pursue a district championship and try to help the Scorpions make some noise in the postseason.
Then comes Stetson.
And when Roberts eventually runs out to center field for the Hatters, he’ll carry with him a baseball journey that started as a five-year-old at Beachside Little League and grew into the opportunity he spent the past six years dreaming about.
As for what Stetson fans can expect when he arrives?
Roberts kept that answer simple.
“I would like Stetson fans to know that I am a dedicated baseball player, and I am so excited to be a part of the program.”
From Beachside Little League to Satellite High School and now Division I baseball, Brady Roberts has spent years turning a childhood dream into a reality.
The next stop is DeLand and center field at Stetson University.
