Aerial view of a phytoplankton bloom off the coast of Norway.
When just the right conditions combine in a body of water, countless microscopic plants living in the liquid, called phytoplankton, begin multiplying, causing a 'bloom' in the water. An increase in nutrients in the water, and warmer water temperatures, can trigger such a bloom.
Like other plants, phytoplankton grow by photosynthesizing. That is, they use the sun’s energy to convert carbon dioxide and nutrients in the water into new plant material. A byproduct of this process is oxygen, which the phytoplankton release into the water and ultimately into the atmosphere. In fact, scientists estimate that at least half of the world’s oxygen is produced by phytoplankton; the rest comes from plants on land.
