Located in Columbia, SC, USC offers the nation’s top undergraduate international business major and is also ranked #1 in Sport Sciences. 40% of their 26,362 undergraduate population comes from out of state. Its Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management and Risk Management and Insurance Programs rank in the top 10 in the country. Its nursing program. 700 nursing students graduated from their program this past year and 100% of its nursing students passed the national licensure exam. Russell House, USC’s brand new student union building, houses the student store and offices for its many clubs and organizations and offers many food options. In fact, USC’s food offerings and college town is ranked as one of the highest in the US!

Our last stop was in South Bend, IN at beautiful Notre Dame.

This year, 2030 lucky freshmen will begin their colleagiate journey at Notre Dame. It is a unique institution! The overwhelming theme permeating campus is a commitment to helping others, the nation, and the world. While there is no Greek life, strong comaradery is evident in each of the 15 single-sex learning dorms with each having its own mascot, chapel, and intramural teams. I witnessed students donning spirited t-shirts with the name of their dorm. 43 Holy Cross priests reside in residence halls. Two new dorms are currently under construction. 80% of the student body lives on campus for at least 3 years and most students live in the same dorm the entire time. 86% of premed students gain acceptance to their first choice medical school and ND has a 90% law school acceptance rate. 98% of Engineering students stay in engineering and are academically successful due to strong academic support. A new archititecture building is under construction and is due to open next year; architeture majors study in Rome for one year graduate in 5 years. Mid ACT scores at this competitive university range from 33-35 and SAT’s from 1390-1530. ND's alumni family is STRONG; it ranks in the top 3 among national university in alumni satisfaction and contribution.

Next stop is Purdue University, located in W. Lafayette, approximately one hour north of Indianapolis and two hours from Chicago.
Purdue is a direct admit university with 30,043 students offering 11 academic colleges and 200 majors. Its revered engineering program is ranked #2 in preparing engineering for the workforce. The engineering school offers students 16 majors to choose including an interdisciplinary engineering degree.
Students do not declare a major until sophomore year and have time to investigate the different disciplines. All students can earn a certificate in entrepreneurship and innovation so that they have tools to start their own business. The nursing program is direct admit program and accepts 140 students/year. PU’s Academic Success program offers free tutoring 2x/week and many classes have a recitation class, a small class outside of lecture taught by a TA to clarify concepts. In addition to engineering and nursing, PU has top English, hospitality tourism and management programs.
West Lafayette is a fun, lively town walking distance from campus!

Next stop was Butler University- unfortunately the weather did not cooperate...
Butler University, located about 10 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, has 4,290 students with 55% of the student body coming from out of state. BU offers 65 majors and has 7 colleges and has a low 12:1 student to faculty ratio. Communications is its newest and fastest growing major with degrees offered in sports media, recording industry studies, digital media, and web development. Their reknown education program allows students to earn a teaching credential in four years and has a 100% placement rate. They also offer pre-pharmacy, a new healthcare in business major, and a Physician’s Assistant programs majors. BU’s has enormous school spirit with students rallying behind its talented basketball team which regularly competes in the NCAA tournament.

This past week my friend and colleague, Teri Kent, visited 4 top schools in Indiana- IU, Butler, Purdue, and Notre Dame. First on the tour was IU...

Indiana U's schools and colleges offer many majors and minors, cross-disciplinary study, an individually designed curriculum, intense honors and research programs, and overseas study in 52 countries. The highly touted Kelley School of Business, with its respected international studies component, offers 18 majors and is ranked #1 among public universities according to Bloomberg Businessweek. offers is among the most popular majors, as are biology and journalism. The internationally known Kinsey Institute for the Study of Human Sexual Behavior is housed on IU's campus, and the music school is tops in its field. Indiana prides itself on its liberal arts education. Majors are declared after one or two years, and the university discourages premature specialization. The town of Bloomington is charming with many restaurants, shops, and trails walking distance from campus.
