Hey all! We have two exciting events at Skidmore in the coming week.

On this Saturday Nov. 5th at 8PM in Zankel we have a concert with Debo band, an Ethiopian-American ensemble with a very distinct sound. Debo Band has received broad critical praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and NPR, who placed the band’s debut album—produced by Thomas “Tommy T” Gobena of Gogol Bordello—on their “50 Favorite Albums Of 2012” list.

On Wednesday Nov. 9 at 7PM in Davis Auditorium we have a film screening with the filmmaker Yared Zeleke who's remarkable feature debut "Lamb" tells the story of young Ephraim, a half-Jewish, Ethiopian boy who is sent by his father to live among distant relatives after his mother’s death. Beautifully shot against the majestic backdrop of Ethiopia's southern mountains, Lamb is an affecting tale about what people will risk in order to take charge of their own destinies. You can see the trailer in the link below.

Hey you! Go be a Seat Filler for the Adirondack Film Festival! The Adirondack Film Festival is coming up on October 21 and 22 in neighboring Glens Falls and they want students to watch some films for them. A description of what to expect can be found below. FREE popcorn, soda, and films, you won't regret it :)

"Student Opportunity: Be a Seat Filler, Watch the Film Fest for FREE A seat-filler gets to watch movies all day at the Adirondack Film Festival for FREE! We want the theaters to always look busy, but sometimes when there’s a major headliner playing, all of the audience might go to one film and ignore the other four playing. That’s where you come in. Your job is to fill the seats in the theater with the lowest occupancy. These are still great films, just a bit less marketable than the others. So your job is simply to watch movies for us! At the beginning of the day, you’ll be given a schedule of which films to attend, ranked in priority. You’ll show up at the top priority film and wait until a few minutes before it starts for the general audience to grab a seat. If there is still a seat available, then you’ll sit down and enjoy the movie. If the theater is full, then you’ll go to the second priority film on your list and repeat the process. By volunteering to be a seat filler, you’ll get to see everything for free. You’ll also have access to plenty of soda and popcorn! And because we’re a non-profit, this counts as community service. To participate, you must be available for at least 8hrs on either day. You may participate as a seat filler for both days of the event, Oct. 21 & 22, or for just one day. This is an opportunity designed for students only who might otherwise not be able to afford to attend. Signing up is simple. Email Bridget Dunigan at [email protected] with the subject, “Seat Filler”, and let her know your availability for Oct. 21 & 22."
