🐎 🐴 If >85% of horses with a diagnosis of EGUS present for behavioural reasons and we know that abnormal behaviour often persists beyond resolution of the gastric disease, why do we ignore behavioural management in their treatment? 🐎 🐴

We shouldn't. This has bugged me for a while, so we teamed up with a behaviouralist, Mary Klinck, and put together the commentary below in an attempt to address this topic in a practical, clinically relevant way.

Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) refers to mucosal gastric disease in horses, including equine squamous gastric disease (ESGD) and equine glandular gastric disease (EGGD), which present as two distinct disease entities differing in pathophysiology and approach to disease management. Both disease...

EGUS Consultations - I am offering a limited number of 1-on-1 EGUS consults for horse owners during November as a fundraising activity towards future research.

Consultations are focused on applying targeted management recommendations to your horse and your situation. They are charged at $USD250/50-minute consult, with 100% of funds going to my privately administered research fund that is used to support future EGUS research.

If you are interested, please book a time from https://calendly.com/egus/consultation

A two-fer this week with another article from Jessica Vokes, resident publishing extrodinaire with 4 under her belt to date. Slowly chipping away at what we need to know to solve the EGUS problem.

Gastrin is an important hormone involved in gastric acid secretion. Despite its importance, validated methods other than radioimmunoassay (RIA) to assess serum gastrin concentrations in horses are lacking. This study aims to determine the agreement between ELISA and RIA in quantifying equine serum g...

Every year Stanford University & Elsevier release rankings for the top scientists in their field. I'm grateful and humbled that, this year, I ranked in the top 1% ( #496/62455) of scientists in the field of Veterinary Science.

I've always say that research is hard, but small things like this, big things like the BHA's recent rule change regarding omeprazole as a result of our research and advocacy, and being in a privileged position to promote the welfare of horses make the journey worthwhile.

One of my favourite photos of the "why" below.

Thank you to the for the opportunity to present at this year's conference. A cool, practioner-focussed conference with internal medicine, lameness, and podiatry streams.

I had the honour of opening the conference with a lecture to all 3 streams on "Can all behavioural disease be blamed on gastric disease". And, finished today with a fantastically organised wet lab. 10/10 attendees hitting the pylorus in stylewas a great way to end the week.
