The got off to an action-packed start! Funded by Mote Scientific Foundation (THANK YOU!) and hosted by , this program provides field research experience for early-career scientists. This week, our four amazing fellows learned to gillnet and longline as we completed our May NOAA sampling. We’re using data from this standardized survey to study trends in shark and ray abundance in and to determine its status as a potential nursery for several species. We deployed 10-yr transmitters in 6 blacknose sharks and a great hammerhead to study how they use . We’ll compare movements to environmental characteristics to better understand why this area is such a great habitat for juveniles. We learned to handle, measure, and fish while working up a total 64 sharks (32 blacktip, 12 blacknose, 12 bonnethead, 3 Atlantic sharpnose, 3 bull, 1 scalloped hammerhead and 1 great hammerhead) and 8 rays (7 cownose and 1 bluntnose). We took samples for ’s Dan Huber and . And we did prey assessments for some of our local mollusk-eating elasmos, such as spotted eagle rays! . These Fellows are seriously rock stars, we’re so excited for the next 8 weeks!

Proud advisor moment! Congratulations Ce!!
Catching, tagging and releasing bull sharks in the Manatee River is arduous scholarly work—often reserved for post-graduate professional researchers. But New College thesis student Cecilia Hampton—an undergraduate—is on the cutting edge of this effort, and her contributions are already garnering accolades.
The marine biology major just earned a $5,000 Guy Harvey Scholarship Award from the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation —an honor given to up to seven students enrolled full-time at state higher education institutions who are “conducting research related to the biology, ecology, habitat or management of fish in Florida’s ocean environment.” Hampton will be using the funds to purchase supplies for her senior thesis.
