To those who are new here, hello! I’m Dr. Thao and I just graduated this summer! As a new practicing dentist, I just wanted to share some advice to dental students and pre-dents!

The most valuable advice I can give you as students is to not be afraid to take risks, and asks lots of questions! In dental school, you’re given the space and opportunity to not know it all. You’re a student! The faculty and patients know that!

When in sim lab, don’t be afraid to completely obliterate a few teeth until you get a hang of the prep. Just go for it, they’re plastic teeth, so don’t hold back! I always like to get my preps really nice on the table top before I move over to the manikin. If you can do the prep perfectly right in front of you, doing it in the mouth on the manakin will be a breeze!

When you start seeing patients in clinic, whether assisting or as the student dentists, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Honestly try your best to ask as many questions as possible. Especially to the upper class men and faculty! They have a lot more knowledge and they’ve been through what you’re going through so they may have the answers your looking for.

When faced with a difficult procedure, if your faculty is there backing you up, don’t be afraid to do it and take risks! You’re safe in dental school because you have faculty there to help you. You want to experience as many difficult procedures as you can in school, because once you graduate, they won’t be there anymore and you’re on your own.
