Flip Turn Fundamentals If you spent a lot of time in a pool as a kid, you might have done flips or somersaults while playing around. You might have been taught to twist yourself or use your arms to help you do a flip turn at the wall, or picked that up on your own. But those extra movements—the twisting, waggling, and wav...

For 2 days (Th/Fr), 300+ lifeguards from Florida coastal communities arrived in Sarasota & Siesta to compete in the USLA (United States Lifesaving Association) Southeast Regional James P. McCarthy Memorial Lifesaving Championships.

Beachgoers unknowingly grabbed & enjoyed front-row seats to the myriad water & sand competitions.

The shore was lined w/ watercraft, in part the boats you see here. I enjoyed seeing all the brightly-colored boats, each boasting the coastal area's branding.

Despite each coastal area's unique branding, team colors, and beach/sand conditions, the bottom line is that these lifeguards daily bring professionalism, knowledge, authority, and high-level skills to their work.

If you had any doubt as to the training these lifeguards undergo & their skill level, you would've walked away after 2 days convinced people are in good hands if/when they find themselves in deadly (& inconvenient) situations.

Too many people NOT familiar with coastal beach communities perceive lifeguards as kids donning the red trunks and whistle, sunning themselves at the town's community swimming pool during summer break.

In coastal beach communities, public beach safety is VERY important!

It's estimated 75% of ALL people on one of our beaches on any given day are NOT locals or people who've only lived here fewer than 4 years.

These people, though many will disagree, do NOT know what they don't know.

Too many arrive from the north, thinking their swimming, boating, and sun experience at a lake or pond provides them with all the requisite skills/expertise needed to stay safe and (more importantly) not jeopardize other people's safety.

At one time or another, EVERY single one of us arrived here as newbies. The difference is that some people do NOT pretend to be a know-it-all w/ a death wish.

I've talked w/ many lifeguards from around the state during my 28 years in Florida. I receive countless emails/messages from lifeguards who KNOW I unconditionally support them.

They thank me, often sharing anecdotes about stupid things people do to harm themselves and others. Too many people do NOT respect the important work these lifeguards do.

While the kids wearing the red trunks and one pieces at your community pool are vetted before ascending the lifeguard stand, in coastal beach communities it's a whole different responsibility, set of circumstances, conditions, and demographics.

In tourism/vacation destinations, millions of people NOT familiar with unique coastal conditions (i.e. bacteria, stingrays, jellyfish, rip currents, waves, thunder/lightning storms, heat exhaustion/stroke, sunburn, ETC) scramble off airplanes, jump into their beachwear, and hit the sand & water...oblivious to FLORIDA.

I could/should write a book on all the stories lifeguards from around the state have shared with me.

Your head would spin off your shoulders in disbelief at just how stupid and irresponsible some people can be toward their own and other people's safety.

Thank YOU, Florida LIFEGUARDS (aka OCEAN RESCURE), for the incredible work you do on our behalf. Many of us appreciate you. (Y)

Happy 4th of July!

My swim lessons on Sundays consist of a 5 year old boy and his 2 1/2 yr old sister... I teach swimming but also water safety. He went to get in the water today and I asked if he remembered the rule about that.. "I don't need to wait for an adult to get in first anymore bc you've done a really good job teaching me, I can swim now and I'm not afraid but you're not doing as good of a job with my sister." Lol, I love kids...his sister told me on lesson 1, she would like to learn how to swim on the deck. Lesson 3, we are leaving the steps and although she's not thrilled the screeching has stopped so I think we are making progress but nothing like a 5 year old to put you in your place. ;)
