Yesterday We were Overwhelmed with students

Our Newtown Clinic has 36 students, but usually only 12 come. At the same time our tutors normally head north in May. But today, the kids came in droves and some of our tutors are already gone. We only had three tutors. We had to turn a dozen kids away.

This program which started with three kids a year ago is overflowing because the kids tell other kids. If we could find a way to engage the parents or just the retirees that live nearby we could empower the community to meet their need.

Any ideas?

Mara, Age 5: Already Reading and Writing

Mara, a five-year-old girl in the middle of her preschool year in Sarasota, is reading simple phonetic words like bin, pin, tin, just four months after she and her tutor started playing games with the letters’ sounds.

Her teacher, Miss Jill, has Mara write the words on the classroom whiteboard and read them for all the kids to hear. Mara will go into kindergarten well above grade level.

Caleb’s Story: Reading Explosion

The RP Foundation's mission is Saving Lives One Reader at a Time. And we're doing that by changing the trajectory of kids' lives.

In December 2023 Caleb (not his real name), an eager 3rd grader, came to his first session. He said, “I can’t read.” Caleb was correct. He didn’t know all the letter sounds. He slowly sounded out the word at. But after just five sessions of sounding out words like mat, sat, hat, Caleb had a reading breakthrough: He read, in one session, TEN PAGES of various simple phonetic words, reading many at a glance.

He was ecstatic! When his tutor arrives, Caleb’s eyes light up, he grins, gives a delighted “Oh! Rocket Phonics!” and nearly jumps out of his seat.

Caleb is on his way to success as a grade-level reader. In the past 5 years, we’ve helped over 1,000 students like Caleb in this area. On average, 90% of our students reach grade level after just 20 sessions of tutoring.

Now, for the first time, we’ve been accepted into a local fundraising event, The Giving Challenge, from noon on April 9-noon on April 10.

Donations of $25 - $100 during that time will be matched three times.

I am asking my most supportive family and friends to agree to donate an amount between $25-$100 at noon EST on April 9.

The first 50 non-profits to get 50 donations get an extra gift. And we would have great momentum on our goal. Will you agree to donate at noon—be one of our “Rocket Phonics First Responders?”

Our goal, before matching, is $15,000. Donations will provide multi-sensory games super effective for the kids' learning, jumbo preschool kits that can be used with many children, complete RP kits, and funds toward training videos that will help us meet the requests to expand.

Thank you for your generous support!

The Rocket Phonics Foundation—A Brief History
Why Do We Say We’re Saving Lives?

Stephen Guffanti, MD, then an ER doctor in Los Angeles, saw “kids killing kids.” And he knew that 80% would not join gangs if they were literate.

Born with a passion for education as well as medicine, Dr. Guffanti began creating Rocket Phonics for his daughter when at age 5, she politely said, “No, thank you, I’m not going to learn to read.”
By third grade Stephanie was reading at twelfth grade level.

Dr. Guffanti and his wife developed the Rocket Phonics reading kit, and for years, sold it mostly online while he continued practicing medicine.

In 2018, retired and living in Sarasota, Dr. Guffanti was asked to tutor kids in a Newtown church’s after-school program. His wife Maureen helped and in just four months they brought eight elementary students up to grade level.

Requests came in for programs at more sites and in 2020 Dr. Guffanti created the Rocket Phonics Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization.

During the last four years our teams of volunteer tutors have helped over 1,000 students in Sarasota and Manatee county schools, with 90% reaching grade level. Currently over 100 Rocket Phonics Foundation tutors meet one-on-one with over 300 students at 10 sites: preschools, elementary, and a middle school.

Now, for the first time, Rocket Phonics Foundation has been accepted into the Community Foundation’s Giving Challenge.
Please Save the Date and Be Triple-Matched!

From noon on Tuesday, April 9 to noon on Wednesday April 10 your donation from $25 - $100 will be triple-matched!

In fact, if we are one of the first foundations to receive 50 donations, we’ll win $250 which will be matched. And we would have great momentum on our goal.

Our goal, before matching, is $15,000. Donations will provide multi-sensory games super effective for the kids' learning, jumbo preschool kits that can be used with many children, complete RP kits, and funds toward training videos that will help us meet the requests to expand.
