Today was one of those moments that reminded me that leadership lessons aren’t reserved for boardrooms, workshops, or conference stages.
On Fridays, my son doesn’t have summer camp, so we’ve made it a tradition to try new experiences together. Today, we visited a local indoor playground that had giant LEGO-style building blocks.
Naturally, we decided to build a fort.
About halfway through construction, several other children joined us. Before long, a group of kids between the ages of 5 and 9 were working together to make it bigger and better.
Then one little boy said the words my son was dreading:
“Let’s break it!”
He was gently encouraged instead to help build it higher.
And that’s when I witnessed something incredible.
I watched his perspective shift.
The children began working together, sharing ideas, solving problems, and encouraging one another. Soon I heard them repeating the phrase:
“Teamwork makes the dream work!”
A few minutes later, another child wanted to knock the fort down. Before my son could even respond, the same little boy who had originally wanted to destroy it spoke up and defended what the group had built together.
It was a real-life lesson unfolding right in front of me.
When people are included, they become invested.
When people help create something, they want to protect it.
When people build together, perspectives change.
Whether you’re 5 or 55, the principle remains the same.
Teamwork makes the dream work isn’t just a catchy phrase. It’s wired into human nature. We all want to belong. We all want to contribute. And when we feel ownership in something bigger than ourselves, amazing things can happen.
Today’s leadership lesson came from a group of children building a fort.
The best lessons often do.
