What actually happens at ReWild? 🚌🎒🌲

Well… it doesn’t look much like traditional afterschool care.

There’s no line of kids sitting around waiting for the next activity.

Instead, they arrive, settle in with a little nature art, head into the forest, and get to work with their hands.

They climb.
They build.
They get muddy.
They argue.
They negotiate.
They invent.
They take risks.
They help each other.
They get bored.
They figure something out.
They go home tired.

Some days they’re learning to whittle or build a fire. Other days they’re foraging, cooking, climbing trees, exploring the creek, tracking animals, or figuring out how to filter water. 💦

But underneath all of those “wild skills” is something even bigger:

They’re learning how to be capable. 💪

How to assess a risk.
How to solve a problem.
How to communicate with a friend.
How to try something they’ve never done before.
How to care for a place.
How to trust themselves.

ReWild is afterschool care, but it was created with a different idea of what childhood needs after a full day.

More nature.
More movement.
More freedom.
More meaningful work.
More room to be a kid.

And maybe a little less rushing from one scheduled activity to the next.

Enrollment is open for ages 5–10 in Sarasota, Tuesday–Thursday, 3:30–5:30 PM. Choose one, two, or three days a week.

“What about the real world?”

It’s a question we were recently asked.

And it makes sense. We want children to be prepared for disappointment, conflict, unfairness, hard conversations, and the reality that other people won’t always make room for them.

But preparation doesn’t have to mean practice for a world we don’t believe in.

What if children could learn that their needs matter AND other people’s needs matter?

That disagreement doesn’t have to mean domination.

That boundaries can coexist with belonging.

That freedom and responsibility can exist together.

That a community can be built around the belief that everyone deserves dignity, voice, and agency.

At Curious & Kind, we aren’t trying to recreate the world…

We’re asking a different question:

What kind of world do we want our children to inherit, and what would it look like to let them experience that world now?

Because children don’t just need to be prepared for the future.

They can help us build it.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Every August, our feeds fill with first-day photos, sharpened pencils, new backpacks, and big hopes for the year ahead. 🎒

And for some families, underneath all that excitement, there’s a little more going on.

A child with a stomachache before school.

A tween who comes home completely spent.

A teenager who needs somewhere to decompress instead of another hour of sitting still.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean that every part of a child’s day happens inside a classroom.

Sometimes what kids need after a full day of learning is less structure, more movement, more fresh air, and more time to simply be themselves.

That’s one of the reasons we created ReWild Afterschool.

ReWild gives children ages 5–10 a place to move, explore, create, take healthy risks, build friendships, and spend time outside after the school day ends.

ReWild recognizes that children need different things at different parts of their day.

SELF-DIRECTED EDUCATION MYTH: “So… Lord of the Flies?” 🪰

One of the biggest misconceptions about self-directed education is that when you stop controlling children, chaos takes over.

That without adults constantly directing, correcting, and managing, children will become selfish, aggressive, unmotivated little humans running wild.

Peter Gray calls this the “Lord of the Flies” misconception.

And here’s the thing: Lord of the Flies is fiction. 🪰

In his essay, Gray points to real-world examples of children in challenging circumstances who did something very different from Golding’s fictional boys: they cooperated, created systems, cared for one another, solved problems, and figured things out.

Self-directed education doesn’t mean no boundaries.

It doesn’t mean no adults.

And it certainly doesn’t mean children are left to fend for themselves.

It means children are trusted as capable human beings.

Adults are still present. We create safe environments. We build relationships. We offer resources, guidance, and support.

But we don’t assume that learning, cooperation, curiosity, or problem-solving only happen when an adult is in control.

Because children aren’t problems to be managed.

They’re people learning how to participate in the world.

And sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is step back enough to let them show us what they’re capable of. 🌿
