It was a privilege for the Trudeau Institute to be recognized at the Cloudsplitter Foundation's 40th Anniversary Celebration at Hotel Saranac.

For four decades, Cloudsplitter Foundation has invested in the people and organizations that make our community stronger. Trudeau Institute is grateful to have been among the many organizations supported by Cloudsplitter over the years. We are deeply grateful to the foundation, its trustees, donors, and everyone who has helped carry this mission forward for 40 years.

Congratulations to Amanda "Red" Schneck, Animal Facilities Manager at Trudeau Institute, for contributing to the first edition of Fundamentals of Cage Wash Operations, edited by James D. Cox and Bruce W. Kennedy.

This publication is the first reference manual dedicated to cage wash operations in laboratory animal science. Red contributed her expertise to the chapter on recordkeeping, an essential part of successful cage wash operations.

Cage wash teams often work behind the scenes, but their work is fundamental to animal care and high-quality research. We are proud to see Red’s knowledge and experience represented in this important new resource! Link in comments.

One week to go. The Fourth Annual Dengue Endgame Summit kicks off September 15th at Hotel Saranac, and registration has officially filled. Last year's summit drew 181 attendees from 48 institutions across 11 countries; this September the conversation continues in Saranac Lake, with new speakers and new data on vaccines, antivirals, and vector control. Almost half of the world's population, about 4 billion people, lives in areas at risk of dengue, which can progress from a debilitating fever to severe, life-threatening illness. Trudeau Institute President and Director Dr. William Reiley thanked Senator Chuck Schumer today for his support in helping the Institute secure $2.5 million in federal funding through a Congressionally Directed Spending request earlier this year.

“The support that Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand provided throughout this process underscores their commitment to both Trudeau Institute and the North Country,” said Dr. Reiley.

This $2.5 million investment will strengthen Trudeau Institute’s scientific capabilities by supporting the acquisition of state-of-the-art research equipment. These new resources will help accelerate research in immunology and infectious diseases, enable innovative scientific initiatives, and expand training opportunities for our staff and students.

We are grateful for the continued support of New York’s U.S. senators as we work to advance biomedical research and strengthen scientific research in the North Country.

Registration is now open for the Fourth Annual Dengue Endgame Summit, September 15–17, 2026, at Hotel Saranac in Saranac Lake, New York.

Recent advances in dengue vaccines, therapeutics, and vector control have created new opportunities to advance dengue control. At the same time, dengue continues to pose a growing global public health challenge.

The Dengue Endgame Summit will bring together experts from academia, government, biotech, pharma, and the medical community to discuss the current state of dengue around the world. Participants will consider what meaningful dengue control could look like and explore potential paths toward achieving it.

The summit is presented by the Global Health Institute at SUNY Upstate Medical University and Trudeau Institute.

Congratulations to Trudeau Institute’s 2026 Summer Undergraduate Research Program interns!

This summer, our interns collaborated closely with Trudeau scientists, gaining valuable hands-on experience and deeper insight into research. The program culminated in our Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium, where each student presented their research projects and reflected on the skills and knowledge they gained during their time at Trudeau Institute.

Thank you to the mentors, laboratory teams, and staff who supported our interns throughout the program and helped make this experience possible. We wish our 2026 interns continued success as they return to their studies and pursue their future careers in science and beyond.

Happy RNA Day!

This past Sunday marked World RNA Day, an annual celebration of ribonucleic acid (RNA), the molecule that carries genetic information, helps regulate gene expression, and directs cells to produce the proteins needed for life. August 1 was chosen because AUG is the RNA start codon that signals the beginning of protein synthesis.

At Trudeau Institute, RNA biology is helping answer important questions about the cellular processes that keep us healthy and, in some instances, contribute to disease. Dr. Shelton Bradrick's research has shown that specialized ribosomes containing the ribosomal proteins RPLP1 and RPLP2 are critical for flaviviruses, including dengue and Zika viruses, to efficiently produce viral proteins and establish infection. By understanding how viruses hijack the host cell's protein-making machinery, researchers can identify new targets for antiviral therapies.
