Is it true that US Americans are too monolingual? - Author Michael Erard writes in the New York Times opinion pages about the difficult task of deciphering how bilingual our culture is in America. The presumption is that people in this country have long expected others to learn English and have resisted learning a foreign language. As it turns out, the Census Bureau has found 20% of people speak another language at home, but even that statistic fails to account for all the multilingual Americans who speak another language somewhere other than home.
